GCE (OL) Area

The extend covered by a surface is it’s surface area.

♦ Area of a rectangle is Length × Width. Area = l × w = lw


♦ Area of a square is Length squared. Area = l × l = l2

♦ Area of a parallelogram is Base × Height.


( Height is the perpendicular length to the base )
Area = l × h = lh

♦ Area of a trapezium is 1/2 ( Sum of parallel sides) ×Height.

Area = (a+b) h/2

♦ Area of a triangle =

(1) The figure shows a parallelogram with adjacent
sides of 8cm and 16cm. One interior angle is 600. Construct cm

four equilateral triangles inside the parallelogram such that 600
completely they cover the parallelogram as well as they touch 16cm
each other without leaving any space between them. The
triangles cannot overlap.

Construct a tetrahedron using this net and thus show that total surface area of the tetrahedron

(2) The base of a pyramid is a square with a side 12cm. Other four sides are isosceles triangles
of height 18cm. Find the surface area of the pyramid.

pasting four isosceles triangles and cutting the pyramid obtained
