Units of area

• A 1 cm by 1 cm square measures 10 mm by 10 mm.

The area of the square = 1 cm × 1 cm
= 10 mm × 10 mm
= 100 mm²
Hence, 1 cm² = 100 mm²
• Similarly, 1 m² = 100 cm × 100 cm = 10 000 cm²
1 km² = 1000 m × 1000 m = 1 000 000 m²

Units of volume

• A 1 cm by 1 cm by 1 cm cube measures 10 mm by 10 mm by 10 mm.

The volume of the cube = 1 cm × 1 cm × 1 cm
= 10 mm × 10 mm × 10 mm
= 1000 mm³
Hence, 1 cm³ = 1000 mm³
• Similarly, 1 m³ = 100 cm × 100 cm × 100 cm = 1 000 000 cm³
1 km³ = 1000 m × 1000 m × 1000 m = 1 000 000 000 m³

Exercise 6 : Answer the following questions.

1) Complete each of the following.

a) 2 cm² = mm² b) 45 cm² = mm²

c) 1600 mm² = cm² d) 48 mm² = cm²
