International Schools of China Student Teaching/Internship Program

ISC cooperates with universities to place student teachers in our system of six
international schools located in China. The schools enroll nearly 1800 students
and range in size from about 150 to 450 students. All six schools are
accredited by either Western Association of Schools and Colleges or North
Central..
Dr. Phil Bassett coordinates our student teacher program. Dr. Bassett was
Director of Teacher Education at Cedarville University in Ohio before joining
ISC in 2004.
Student teaching placements are usually made 9- 15 months in advance of
the placement and by April each year most placements have been made for
the following school year.
ISC places student teachers with teachers who have taught in our system for
three or more years and are recommended by their principals. We work with
universities to meet their requirements relative to such things as
credentialing. Each of our schools has teachers or administrators with
advanced degrees and experience enabling them to provide supervision and
evaluation of the student teacher. Most universities provide a small
honorarium to the cooperating teacher and supervisor.
We screen prospective student teachers by asking each one to provide:
1. A Christian testimony including a clear conversion experience and
evidence of a life of faith.
2. A brief essay explaining the desire to student teach in China. We give
preference to those who have an interest in serving God overseas as
teachers in the future.
3. A recommendation from one or more faculty indicating that the
prospective student teacher has strong teaching skills and positive
dispositions predictive of successful student teaching in a multi cultural
setting while living cross culturally.
4. Assurance that unless Providentially hindered that they will come to
China if a student teaching placement is found for them regardless of
what city it is in. (Students may request a specific city, but we cannot
guarantee placement there.) We understand that final clearance to
come to China may not be given by the sending university until a few
weeks before the placement or may be withdrawn if there are concerns
about the student teacher.
Many of our student teachers come from schools that participate in CCTECCs
Student Teaching Abroad program and thus have some preparation for living
and teaching cross culturally. We ask that universities who do not participate
in this program work with us to provide some orientation experience for the
student.

Costs and Housing (2014-15) Students live in the same Chinese

communities as our teachers, and usually share an apartment with a teacher
or another student teacher. The cost for housing, meals and incidentals will
vary from city to city and for each student but $130-140/ week will generally
cover these expenses. Airfare usually ranges from $1200-$1500. Visa costs
can change, but we suggest you budget $240 for a visa for 8 weeks or less
and $380 for 9 to 12 weeks.
