The article, Brutal Attraction: The Making of Raging Bull by Richard Schickle,
discusses the development of the film, starting from an obsession of Robert
DeNiro, who insisted that the only person who can make this biopic successful
was Martin Scorsese. This article also goes on to say that Scorsese had no
interest in the film until he became ill and almost died. With DeNiro still insisting
Scorsese said, I couldnt understand Bobs [Robert DeNiro] obsession with it,
until, finally, I went through that rough period of my own. After recovery Scorsese
agreed to make the film with DeNiro.

Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support
or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.?
The article did state, It was Bobs film, says Irwin Winkler, the producer of
Raging Bull. By which he means that it was Robert De Niros driving passion,
long before it became Martin Scorseses common-consent greatest work. It is
clear that Robert DeNiro was totally hands on and committed to his role as La
Motta. To bring the story to life DeNiro gained a significant amount weight to fit
the part of La Motta in his after glory years. This makes me appreciate the film
even more, knowing that the film became so personal to DeNiro (and even later
to Scorsese) and they made sure to pay great attention to details.
Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed
as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the
article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film,
(although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its
place in film history or the contributions of the director.
I enjoyed this film for its tone. It stands out from other movies of the like (i.e.
Rocky) because its not glammed up nor does it seem over acted. There is a
sense of realness in the actors that at times you almost forget its just a movie. I
enjoyed the fighting sequences especially when the audio goes almost mute and
you can only hear the boxing gloves hitting the opponents body. Even more so, I
enjoyed the shots that are slowed down just as blood is gushing out of the
boxers mouth, nose, or eye.
The relationship between DeNiro and Pesci as brothers is something almost
magical. Their chemistry is undeniable and they compliment each other very
well. Improvisation was on point and it was a joy watching them (again) on
screen together.
