Introduction Thesis In the novel Away by Michael Gow all the characters have the desire to win and this can be
interpreted as making the right choices for a good life. These attitudes to life can be seen through the characters
Gwen, Harry, Vic and Tom.

Body Paragraph One

Topic sentence The character Gwen is the main protagonist who has a desire to win in the play Away. Gwen is seen
as a stereotypical nagging wife and a mother who can be classified as a snob. Gwens dialogue is full of negativity and
she is seen as a source of conflict and a barrier to winning a good life for her family. This is shown through her choice
of achieving a good life by purchasing a new caravan Page 10 Weve got a new caravan. Everything in it you could
want. She sees herself superior to others and has caused conflict in her relationship with her family for the expense
of her material possessions and social status.

to Australian values ideas, attitudes and actions.
To many it may be how a typical Australian is perceived by the rest of the world, and the differences between their
own culture and that of Australias. Todays typical Australian is in many ways different to the typical Australian 50

society when compared with that of the Australia 50 years ago. My article will identify how different composers
promote Australian ideas and values.

This extract depicts how many Australian families were devastated like Coral and Roy to the point where it caused the
collapse of countless family. This line also portrays a new perspective of war by Australians as that of being terrible.

Gow emphasises the strong influence that the setting can have by placing the characters in a number of typical
Australian holiday places, and having the play set during the holiday season. The beach, Caravan Park and the luxury
hotel on the gold coast depict the importance of the Australian values and idea of spending time with family during
the hot Christmas season at popular Australian destinations.
As a result of the play being set in the 1960s Gow uses comments and jokes of that time. For example, there is
