How does ozone pool treatment work?
Ozone is injected and mixed into the pool recirculation water stream via the venturi. Once dissolved, ozone
reacts with the cell membranes of bacteria and viruses, oxidizing them and converting them to carbon
dioxide and water. Similarly, ozone oxidizes other pool water organic contaminants such as urine, sweat
and saliva.
Why do we need to use sodium bromide (NaBr)?
To further increase the solubility of the gaseous ozone in water without increasing the size of the ozone
generator sodium bromide (NaBr), a naturally occurring component in sea water, can be added to the
pool.
Ozone (O3) reacts with sodium bromide (NaBr) to form hypobromous acid (HOBr) which itself is a
powerful bactericide. Upon reacting with an organic molecule in the pool water hypobromous acid is
converted back to bromide. This bromide then reacts with ozone to form hypobromous acid and the cycle
begins again.
