ASSIGNMENT # 4: Line Integrals

Fall 2014

Due Monday, October 6, 2014 at 2pm in box 7, slot 11 (A-M) and 12 (N-Z), located across
from MC4066. Late assignments or assignments submitted to the incorrect dropbox will
receive a grade of zero. Write your solutions clearly and concisely. Marks will be deducted
for poor presentation and incorrect notation.

connecting the points (1, 0) to (0, 1).
a) ~g1 : circular arc ~g1 (t) = (cos t, sin t),

t [0, /2]. [2 marks]

b) ~g2 : straight line segment ~g2 (t) = (1 t, t),

t [0, 1]. [2 marks]

c) ~g3 : from (1, 0) horizontally to the origin, then vertically to (0, 1). [2 marks]
d) ~g4 : from (1, 0) vertically to (1, 1), then horizontally to (0, 1).
e) ~g5 : circular arc ~g5 (t) = (cos t, sin t),

t [0, 3/2].

2. Compute the area of the part of the cylinder x2 + y 2 = 4 between the xy-plane and
the plane z = y + 2. [3 marks]
Solution:
We parameterize the circle using ~g = (2 cos t, 2 sin t) and get that ~g 0 = (2 sin t, 2 cos t).
Then, the line integral is,

Solution:
This line integral is finding the surface area of the cylinder with height e16 and radius
4. The formula for the surface area is,
2rh = 24e16 = 8e16 .

4. The force between two positive electric changes (one, of charge , is placed at the origin,
and the other, charge one coulomb, is placed at (x, y)) is given by F~ = ~r/ krk3 . How
much work is needed in order to move the one-coulomb charge along the straight line
from (1, 0) to (1, 2) if the other change remains at the origin? [4 marks]
Solution:
We parameterize the path as ~g = (1 2t, 2t) and ~g 0 = (2, 2) with 0 t 1. The
work is computed using a line integral of the force,

5. Evaluate ~g xy dx+yex dy where ~g is the rectangle with vertices (0, 0), (1, 0), (1, 1), (0, 1),
oriented counterclockwise.
Solution:

~g30 = (1, 0), with 0 t 1,
~g40 = (0, 1), with 0 t 1.

Next, compute each integral,
