Are you A, B, O or AB? It is a widespread belief in Japan that character is linked to blood type.

What's behind this conventional wisdom?

Blood is one thing that unites the entire human race, but most of us don't think about our blood
group much, unless we need a transfusion. In Japan, however, blood type has big implications for
life, work and love.
Here, a person's blood type is popularly believed to determine temperament and personality.
"What's your blood type?" is often a key question in everything from matchmaking to job
applications.
According to popular belief in Japan, type As are sensitive perfectionists and good team players,
but over-anxious. Type Os are curious and generous but stubborn. ABs are arty but mysterious
and unpredictable, and type Bs are cheerful but eccentric, individualistic and selfish.
About 40% of the Japanese population is type A and 30% are type O, whilst only 20% are type
B, with AB accounting for the remaining 10%.

What's your blood type?

The main blood group system is ABO, with four blood types: A, B, O, AB

Rhesus system, for which you can be positive or negative, is the second most important
with regard to blood transfusions

In total there are 32 recognised blood group systems, which all have either positive or
negative indicators

The discovery of the latest two blood types - Langereis and Junior - were announced by
researchers from Vermont earlier this year

Four books describing the different blood groups characteristics became a huge publishing
sensation, selling more than five million copies.
Morning television shows, newspapers and magazines often publish blood type horoscopes and
discuss relationship compatibility. Many dating agencies cater to blood types, and popular anime
(animations), manga (comics) and video games often mention a character's blood type.
A whole industry of customised products has also sprung up, with soft drinks, chewing gum, bath
salts and even condoms catering for different blood groups on sale.

Blood types, however, are simply determined by proteins in the blood. Although scientists
regularly try to debunk these beliefs, they remain popular in Japan. One reason often given is that
in a relatively uniform and homogenous society, it provides a simple framework to divide people
up into easily recognisable groups.
"Being the same is considered a good thing here in Japanese society," says translator Chie
Kobayashi. "But we enjoy finding little differences that distinguish people. On the other hand, it
can also lead to bad things being said about the minority B and AB types."

A minister quits

In July 2011, Minister for Reconstruction Ryu Matsumoto resigned after being criticised for
making insensitive remarks. He blamed his blood type.
"I would like to offer my apologies for offending the people in the disaster-hit areas. I thought I
was emotionally close to the disaster victims, but I lacked sufficient words and my comments
were too harsh.
"My blood's type B, which means I can be irritable and impetuous, and my intentions don't
always come across.
"My wife called me earlier to point that out. I think I need to reflect about that."

Japan minister quits after a week

It was only in 1901 that the ABO blood group system was discovered by the Austrian scientist
Karl Landsteiner. His Nobel prize-winning work made it possible to identify the different blood
groups, paving the way for transfusions to be carried out safely.
Theorists of eugenics later hijacked his research during the inter-war years, with the Nazis using
his work to further their ideas of racial supremacy.

It was also adopted by Japan's militarist government in the 1930s to train better soldiers, and
during World War II, the Imperial Army is reported to have formed battle groups according to
blood type.
The study of blood types in Japan gained mass appeal with the publication of a book in the 1970s
by Masahiko Nomi, who had no medical background. More recently, his son Toshitaka went on
to promote it further through a series of popular books - he also runs the Institute of Blood Type
Humanics. He says his aim is not to judge or stereotype people, but simply to make the best of
someone's talents and improve human relationships.
Between them, father and son have published dozens of books on the subject, not just the handful
of bestsellers.
These beliefs have been used in unusual ways.

Societies dominated by B types are more prone to polytheism - like Buddhism and Hinduism with lots of gods
Professor Maekawa
The women's softball team that won gold for Japan at the Beijing Olympics is reported to have
used blood type theories to customise training for each player. Some kindergartens have even
adopted methods of teaching along blood group lines, and even major companies reportedly
make decisions about assignments based on employees' blood types.
In 1990 the Asahi Daily newspaper reported that Mitsubishi Electronics had announced the
creation of a team composed entirely of AB workers, thanks to "their ability to make plans".
These beliefs even affect politics. One former prime minister considered it important enough to
reveal in his official profile that he's a type A, whilst his opposition rival was type B. Last year a
minister, Ryu Matsumoto, was forced to resign after only a week in office, when a bad-tempered
encounter with local officials was televised. In his resignation speech he blamed his failings on
the fact that he was blood type B.

Not everyone sees the blood type craze as simply harmless fun.
It sometimes manifests itself as prejudice and discrimination, and it seems this is so common, the
Japanese now have a term for it - bura-hara, meaning blood-type harassment. There are reports of
discrimination against type B and AB groups leading to children being bullied, the ending of
happy relationships, and loss of job opportunities.
Despite repeated warnings, many employers continue to ask blood types at job interviews, says
Terumitsu Maekawa, professor of comparative religion at Tokyo's Asia University and author of
several books about blood groups. He's critical about sweeping popular beliefs about blood
types.
"We can point out some general tendencies as a group, but you can't say this person is good or
bad because of their blood type."

Professor Maekawa has

written several books about blood groups
His own research, he says, is based more on empirical research rather than popular superstition.
In his books he explores the theory that predominant blood types may determine religious beliefs
and societal norms.
In the Western world, O and A types make up almost 85% of people, but in India and Asia, B
types predominate. Japan, he says, is unusual in Asia in that it has more variety of blood types.

They think I am weird and strange - lots of people tell me they don't understand what I am
thinking about
Masako, who has the rarer AB type blood
"A type societies tend to be characterised by monotheism such as Christianity and Judaism, with
one fundamental analysis of human beings and a strong sense of societal norms. But societies
dominated by B types are more prone to polytheism - like Buddhism and Hinduism - with lots of
gods, and they think people are all different."
Professor Maekawa, himself type B, says in Japan his blood group is often criticised for being
too individualistic and selfish.
"It isn't very nice. But it doesn't annoy me or hurt me, because it has no scientific basis at all."
In a smart state-of-the-art clinic busy with lots of people donating blood, director Akishko Akano
says he's not aware that the negative image of certain blood types has an impact on their work, or
dissuades minority B and AB types from coming forward. A bigger problem in Japan's rapidly
ageing society, he says, is persuading enough young people to volunteer as blood donors.

Masako, who has type

AB, has donated blood eight times
In the next room, I find Masako, lying on a bed strapped to a quietly purring machine as a nurse
takes samples. This is the eighth time she's given blood. Her blood type is AB, which is rare as it
accounts for only 10% of people in Japan.
"People sometimes don't like me," she tells me. "They think I am weird and strange. Lots of
people tell me they don't understand what I am thinking about."

Although Masako laughs as she tells me this, it seems that in Japan, no amount of scientific
debunking can kill the widely held notion that blood tells all.

Your blood group type can reveal your personality; Bright and dark aspects of your personality.
Lets have a look that what blood types possess which kind of qualities for any person and
which blood type is compatible to another.
Blood Type O

Type Os are outgoing, and very social. They are initiators, although they dont always finish
what they start. Creative and popular, they love to be the center of attention and appear very self
confident.
Blood Type A

While outwardly calm, they have such high standards (perfectionists) that they tend to be balls of
nerves on the inside. Type As are the most artistic of the blood groups. They can be shy, are
conscientious, trustworthy, and sensitive.
Blood Type B

Goal oriented and strong minded, type Bs will start a task and continue it until completed, and
completed well. Type Bs are the individualists of the blood group categories and find their own
way in life.
Blood Type AB

Type ABs are the split personalities of the blood groups. They can be both outgoing and shy,
confident and timid. While responsible, too much responsibility will cause a problem. They are
trustworthy and like to help others.

Famous Os: Al Capone, Gerald Ford, Mikhail Gorbachev, John Gotti, Crystal Kay, Queen
Elizabeth II, John Lennon, Paul Newman, Elvis Presley, Ronald Reagan
Blood Type A Tend to be cooperative, sensitive, clever, passionate and smart. Often bottling
up anxiety in order to get along with others, they may hold in their emotions until they explode.
Many are tense, impatient and unable to sleep well. While they are capable of leadership
positions, they may not take them because the stress is not good for their tightly wired systems.
In Japan many As are in research. They have roles in discovering more about and refining
science, economics, manufacturing, etc. Their research on microflora and other areas of medicine
is some of the best and most meticulous in the world. They are perfectionists to say the least.
This quality shows up in their perfecting electronics like TVs and also less expensive more
efficient cars that were originally created here in the US.
Blood type As tend to have more sensitive constitutions. Too much stress weakens their
immunity more quickly than other blood types. Low stomach acid is common among blood
type As even from birth, so special care should be taken when eating animal proteins.
Using digestive enzymes, like Assist Dairy and Protein, along with consuming fermented foods
and drinks is really a must for As. It is not surprising to me that fermented foods like Miso and
Natto play an important role in providing easily digested protein, in the Japanese Diet. They also
eat raw fish which is much easier to digest than cooked.
Blood Type B Blood type B individuals tend to be balanced: thoughtful like As and yet
ambitious like Os. They are empathetic, easily understanding others points of view, yet often
hesitating to challenge or confront. Chameleon-like and flexible, they make good friends.
Blood Type AB Tend to be very charming and popular. They dont sweat the small stuff and
can be seen as spiritual and even at times a bit flaky. Only about 2 5% of the
population are blood type AB. There is never a dull moment in a ABs life, so if you find one for
a friend, consider yourself lucky! Youll enjoy some exciting times together!
Like blood type As, ABs react to stress poorly. They are stronger and more active than type As,
but need to pay attention to stress levels so that they dont compromise their immunity.
Sometimes it is difficult to be an AB. ABs dont like to fit in anyone elses boxes. If they feel
too confined, theyll break out of that box and do things their own way. When it comes to food
choices and AB must discover when they are more B-like or A-like. For example, dairy foods
like milk kefir can be excellent for them or not good at all.
Blood Type O Tend to be loners or leaders and are intuitive, focused, self-reliant and daring.
They handle stress better than other blood types and have strong immune systems, a well

developed physique and a physically active nature. Blood type Os tend to have sluggish blood
flow and feel better with vigorous exercise for about an hour each day.
So whats your blood type? Do you think its true?

Dieting methods by blood type
Erica Angyal, a Miss Universe Japan official nutritionist and health consultant, has published
books on health and beauty by blood type, such as Bijo no Ketsuekigata BOOK (beautiful
womens blood type) and Bijo no Ketsuekigata-bestu Obento BOOK (beautiful womens lunch
box by each blood type).
Also, the fitness and health magazine FYTTEs February edition introduces a dieting method by
blood type directed by Angyal.
Here is brief introduction to the dieting method.
Recommended diet for type A
Recommended foods for type A people are carbohydrates such as rice and grain, vegetables, and
fruits because type As originated from agricultural tribes who mainly ate foods from plants.
However, type As usually dont digest dairy products easily, so it is better to have yogurt. Also,
meat is difficult to digest and turns into fat easily for type A people, so it is better to eat beans
and fish for protein. Japanese traditional foods such as miso soup, natto, tofu, and so on are a
good match for type A people.
Recommended exercise for type A

Stress is the main enemy for type A people, so slow exercise such as yoga is the best way to
relax.
Recommended diet for type B
Type B people have the ability to digest various foods such as vegetables, fruit, fish, meats, grain
and dairy products because type Bs originated from nomad tribes who ate various foods to
survive in their extreme environment. It is best to have various foods, especially protein,
otherwise type B people get irritated and tired easily. Lean meat with low fat, especially beef and
lamb, are good because they are easy to digest and make metabolism faster for type B people.
However, chicken, sesame, corn, soba noodles and wheat make type B people fat.
Recommended exercise for type B
Type B blood people have high stress, so it is best to play active sports such as tennis and golf,
and also try slow exercise such as yoga to relax.
Recommended diet for type AB
Type AB people have features of both type A and type B. For example, type AB people dont
have enough stomach acids to easily digest some kinds of meat like type As. Protein from soy
beans is good for type AB people, as are some dairy products. Therefore, it is best to take protein
from fish and soy beans, and other various foods such as vegetables, fruit, nuts, yogurt, and so
on, with a good balance. Wheat, chicken, corn, sesame and soba noodles are not good for dieting.
Recommended exercise for type AB
Type AB people have negative feelings such as anger and hostility and it is bad for their body
when they get excited too much. So the best exercises for type AB people are yoga to relax their
body and aerobics to let stress out.
Recommended diet for type O
Type O people can digest meat easier than other blood types. However, lack of protein tires them
easily too because type O people originated from tribes that hunted animals and gathered nuts,
fruit and plants. The tribes ate low fat meat, so low fat beef and lamb are good for type O people.
Especially fish with omega-3 fatty acid are the best protein source for them. Eating fresh
vegetables and fruit is recommended. The early tribes did not eat grains and dairy products, so
those foods are difficult to digest for type O people. Wheat and dairy products make type O
people get fat easily.
Recommended exercise for type O

Exercises which improve the heart rate function and muscles, such as running and boxing are
good for type O people. Active exercises keep their hormone balance right.

Personality Traits By Blood Type

Find out what blood type you are and see if it matches your personality.
'TYPE A'
Type As most often described themselves in ways related to the following
characteristics: sensitive to the needs of others, good listeners, detail oriented,
analytical, creative and inventive. Type As may seem calm on the outside, but
inside, youre filled with anxiety and worry. Youre perfectionists and often shy and
sensitive. Usually introverted, youre stable and thoughtful. You make good listeners
and are sensitive to color and your surroundings. You like to be fashionable and are
up on the latest trends, but never flashy or gaudy. You like romantic settings and
often shun reality for fantasy worlds. A is most compatible with A and AB in the love
department. Common career choices: accountant, librarian, economist, writer,
computer programmer, and gossip columnist.

Blood Type A - Tend to be cooperative, sensitive, clever, passionate and smart.

Often bottling up anxiety in order to get along with others, they may hold in their
emotions until they explode. Many are tense, impatient and unable to sleep well.
While they are capable of leadership positions, they may not take them because the
stress is not good for their tightly wired systems.
'TYPE B'
Blood Type B's often described themselves in ways related to the following
characteristics: subjective, easygoing, creative, original and flexible. In another
study, Type B's scored significantly higher on "intuiting," indicating a preference or
sixth sense information; and they scored high on the "intuiting/feeling" combination,
indicating that they tend to be insightful, mystical, idealistic, creative, globallyoriented, people-oriented and good at imagining. They also reported that they
learned best through listening, then reflecting on and interpreting what they had
observed. Perhaps the nomadic life of the steppes contributed to long hours given
over to talk as well as ample time for meditation and reflection. Type B's can be
very goal-oriented and often complete the ambitious tasks set before them.
Outgoing and very charming, youre good at reading people and providing support.
Though critical of appearance (but not your own), you arent picky and are unlikely
to dwell over the little things.
Type Bs are impulsive individualists who often create their own path in life. You are
very strong and optimistic. B is most compatible with B and AB lovers. Common
career choices: cook, hairdresser, military leader, talk show host, and journalist.
Blood type B individuals tend to be balanced: thoughtful like A's and yet ambitious
like O's. They are empathetic, easily understanding others' points of view, yet often
hesitating to challenge or confront. Chameleon-like and flexible, they make good
friends.
'TYPE O'
Type Os most often described themselves in ways related to the following
characteristics; responsible, decisive, organized, objective, rule-conscious, and
practical. Both male and female Type Os reported a higher percentage of the
mesomorphic body type when compared to controls. Interestingly, Type Os also
scored significantly higher than the rest in sensing using the 5 senses to gather
information, and in the sensing-thinking combination, indicating that they are more
detail and fact oriented, logical, precise and orderly.
Type O's are the social butterflies. Often popular and self-confident, you are very
creative and always seem to be the center of attention. You make a good impression
on people and youre often quite attractive. Organized and determined, your
stubbornness will help you reach your goals. You make good leaders. Lovewise, O is
most compatible with O and AB. Common career choices: banker, politician,
gambler, minister, investment broker, and pro athlete. Blood Type O - Tend to be
loners or leaders and are intuitive, focused, self-reliant and daring. They handle
stress better than other blood types and have strong immune systems, a well

developed physique and a physically active nature.

'TYPE AB'
Type AB often receives mixed messages about emotional health. While you tend to
be drawn to other people and are friendly and trusting, there is a side of you that
feels alienated from the larger community. At your best, you are intuitive and
spiritual, with an ability to look beyond the rigid confines of society. You are
passionate in your beliefs, but you also want to be liked by others and this can
create conflicts. In an independent study, Type ABs described themselves as
emotional, passionate, friendly, trusting and empathetic. Type ABs are considered
some of the most interesting of the blood types, both John F. Kennedy and Marilyn
Monroe were Type ABs and although both are long gone, they hold a place in our
national psyche to this day. Not surprisingly, ABs can be quite dualistic, possessing
both A and B traits. You may be shy and outgoing, and hesitant and confident. You
often stand out from others, dont like labels, and are nice and easy going. You are
logical and determined to do things correctly. Usually trustworthy, you like to help
others. You often speak in a serious manner. Your patience, concentration, and
intelligence are admirable. AB can find a soul mate with any other blood type.
Common career choices: bartender, lawyer, teacher, sales representative, and
social worker.
Blood Type AB - Tend to be very charming and popular. They don't sweat the small
stuff and can be seen as spiritual and even at times a bit "flaky". Only about 2 - 5%
of the population are blood type AB. There is never a dull moment in a AB's life, so if
you find one for a friend, consider yourself lucky! Youll enjoy some exciting times
together! Sometimes it is difficult to be an AB. AB's don't like to fit in anyone else's
"boxes". If they feel too confined, they'll break out of that box and do things their
own way.
