List of Bija & Planetary Mantras

by Julene Packer-Louis
What is a Mantra?
Mantra is a Sanskrit word that means "to set free from the mind." Mantras are physical
vibrations in the form of sound, which produce energizing effects in our physical and subtle
bodies. Chanting mantras affects both our physical bodies and spiritual consciousness; it
also energizes prana [breath of life]. Therefore we grow in body/mind/spirit. When we
combine the sound energy with the energy of mental intention, we strengthen and direct the
energy of the mantra. Mantras evoke powerful energy and should be used carefully and with
respect. Mantras can cleanse negativity and spiritual impurities from the physical body,
subtle energy centers, and burn off karma [mostly parabdha but adepts can burn off
sanchita]. However, when used improperly they can burn you. So please be careful when
using mantras. It is best to begin with just one mala or two until you know how the energy
will affect you. Malas are prayer beads that consist of 108 beads representing the 108 astral
channels that lead from the heart to the subtle body.
The mantras below are taken from Healing Mantras by Thomas Ashley-Farrand. I highly
recommend obtaining a copy of this book for more detailed information, along with the CD
for the pronunciation, if you intend to begin a regular mantra yoga practice.

JAYA JAGANNATH
Dear Gauranga,
The Graha Beejakshara are HA, SA, KA, BA,GA,DA,PA,BHA & TA for the nine
planets from the Sun to Ketu in the regular order. For these alshara to
become a Mantra, you have to add AGNI (RA) and offer it to either Brahma
,Shiva or Vishnu (O). Then the mantras can be HRAM, SRAM, KRAM..etc or HRIM,
SRIM, KRIM...etc. or HROUM, SHROUM, KROUM..etc.

You have made some conceptual errors in the delination of the

Beejakshara Mantra. The Vagbeeja is "Aim" which is the shakti of Mercury,
which is also called "Chaitanya Beeja" while the "Tara" Beeja is "OM" which
is also the naisargika Guru mantra and is called the shakti of Jupiter.
The name KRISHNA is derived from the word AKARSHANA or the power to
attract all and is hence, the most desirable. This is also called the "Kama
Beeja" KLIM and fulfills all desires including Moksha. As regards Jagannatha
Mahaprabhu, He is remembered with the "Jaya" repeated twice in confirmity
with the Moon (Two/Double) and then the Rama Beeja "Sri" followed by
Jagannatha making the mantra "JAYA JAYA SRI JAGANNATHA"
The poison is seen in the Nairtitti Kona (SW Direction ruled by Rahu). The
poison destroying Beeja is "Ksha". Thus the Narasimha Beejakshara is
"KshrOum" as it removes all poisons and evils. Similarly, the Garuda mantra
is "Kshipa Aum Swaha" which destroys all snakes, enemies and evils and
starts with the syllable "Ksha".
Hare Rama Krishna

While we are waitnig fro Sarat to list the correct mentras for the
planets, I was contemplatink on how the bija mantras would be related to the
planets. I've come up with the following order (please correct me if I'm
wrong):
>
> Sun - RAM (as Sri Rama is the Avatar)
> Moon - KLIM (as Krishna is the Lord, plus she's a feminine planet, so
Radha-Krishna's bija mantra comes here)
> Mars - KSRAUM (Lord Nrismhadeva)
> Mercury - OM (for Lord Vsihnu)
> Jupiter - AIM (Guru - bija mantra)
> Venus - SRIM (for Lakshmi-devi)
> Saturnus HRIM (as he's punishing like Durga, Lakshmi's shadow)
>
> I didn't assign tow to the upagrahas, as they are not as substantial s the
seven planets.
>
> Is this correct or not? I'm interested in the other mantras as well. When
are they coming?

Beej Mantras
Sanskrit is the most ancient language in the world. Indians believe that this is the language of Gods. The eternal
vedic literature, i.e. Vedas, upanishadas, puranas, and countless granthas (knowledge books) were written in
Sanskrit. This language has given huge treasure of knowledge to the mankind. Sanskrit is highly effective and
expressive because of multi-dimensional features of grammar. It has become rich and powerful because of unique
beejaksharas (seed alphabets), jodaksharas (combined alphabets) and inimitably perfect grammar constituents like
sandhis (connectives), vigrahas, visargas, swaras & upa-swaras (vowels & sub-vowels) vyanjanas (consonants),
anunasikas / anuswaras (nasal sounds) & samasas (compound words).
This has given high flexibility and versatility to the language. This language and its script (Devnagari) is designed in
such a way that even a small utterance of any swara (sound / vowel) or vyanjana (consonant) renders positive effect
on our gross body, external & internal organs, subtle bodies (panchakoshas), sapta-chakras, seven tissues (saptadhatus) like rasas (juices), rakta (blood), meda (fats), snayu (muscles) majja (marrow), asthi (bone) & veerya
(reproductive tissues).
Hence, every word that we utter or every thought that we generate creates vibrations in our body at the minute level.
These vibrations and ripples caused by our thoughts work on our mind and body. Sanskrit has 52 beejaksharas, out
of which, there are 36 vyanjanas (consonants) and 16 swaras (vowels). These beejaksharas hold the secret of
universe which is called srushti or prakriti (nature). The permutation & combination of these beejaksharas formulate
millions of syllables. This language, therefore is deserrvingly called, the mother of all languages.
The creation of this universe is the manifestation of God, whom we call the superpower or supreme energy. These
beejaksharas have come from this manifestation. The term beeja itself connotes that they are in miniaturized form.
But they hold amazing power. Lets try to assess the power of these beejaksharas from scientific and logical point of
view.
The spinal cord in the human body consists of 33 vertebrae (beads). Of the 36 consonants, barring three, i.e., La (L),
Ksha (Xa)& Gya (&a), each of the remaining beejaksharas is ascribed to 33 vertebrae. However, before going into
details, we need to understand what is beeja and how it is formed.
Modern day science states that if an electricity is passed through the water, the combination leads to formation of
Amino acids. These amino acids are believed to be the primitive form of all living and non-living things in the
universe, from which bacteria and viruses came into being, further facilitating the evolution of all the elements of
nature. The Sanskrit term for electricity is veej which begins with the beejakshara va (va ). Va is perceived to be a
big hollow. It represents the cavity of universe. It is a big zero. One way it evokes the sense of nothingness and on
the other hand it suggests everythingness. When we adjoin a stick to bring down this hollow circle, va (va )
becomes complete.
Va stands for varun-tatva (water). To understand this concept on a broader scale, let us go back to the story of
Samudra-manthan. The suras & asuras (gods & demons) churned out the divine ocean and extracted number of
divine things. The churning process resulted in friction which generated energy and from this energy, the Brahman
was created. Brahman is the manifestation of the Creator.
But the question remains, how the beeja came into existence. It came into existence from the energy. Let us
understand this phenomenon with practical example. How do we prepare paneer or delicacies like Shrikhand? We

add lime juice or curd to the milk, which causes fermentation process because of bacteria. This means, the original
substance is milk and when it is mixed up with curd it turns in to something. Same principle applies to creation of
beejas from original cosmic energy. These beejas are basically recognized as sound energy. Incidentally, in Sanskrit
the beejakshara ba is written as ba which means the original alphabet va (va) is intersected by a cross-line, the
way interspersion of milk is done. Due to constant cosmic vibrations, the sound energy of Beeja gets further
downgraded to turn into matter. When this alphabet ba (ba) is suffixed with another beejakshara ja (ja), the word
beeja comes into existence. The ja beeja itself stands for creativity and new energy.
Coming back to Samudra-manthan story, one of the divine phenomenon that had emerged from it was Kamala, i.e.
Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth. Kamala is associated with the earth. Kamala is also called maya or illusion. Every
human being, as we know, is entrapped in to two desires, wealth & woman and therefore, keeps taking birth again
and again in the quest of acquiring these two things. As a matter of fact, the matter keeps taking place quite often.
This phenomenon has to be perceived. It has to be experienced. We have to feel its existence. Let us understand it in
more simple manner. When the electricity passes through the tube light, it glows and we are able to see the light. But
we cannot see actual energy. What we are able to see is the light. Same principle applies to the existence of God.
We are not able to see him. What we witness is his manifestation.
This means the energy keeps changing its form again and again. Going by this principle, we can conclude that the
phenomenon of God is nothing but the manifestation of omniscient & omnipresent energy. Are we able to see this
energy? not quite. In the similar vein, we cannot see the God. This divine energy is related to cosmic vibrations,
because of which emission of heat takes place. This leads to creation of light energy. The light energy gets further
downgraded to convert into Sound energy. Thus the matter is created and so are beejaksharas.
When these beejaksharas are mixed with swaras, upa-swaras, jodaksharas & anuswaras (nasal sounds) millions of
permutations & combinations are possible. These are estimated to be 33 crores and these are imagined to be 33
crores of gods & goddesses as per Hindu philosophy, because they possess the godly power.
In short, beeja is the primitive form of sound energy. Every beeja or seed has its own genetic code. A beeja can
transform into hundreds of other forms, the way one beeja facilitates growing up of tree and its various other parts like
leaves, flowers, fruits etc. are also created from same beeja. Same beeja also helps in formulation of living or nonliving things. The human being has evolved from the same beeja. Hence, going by this logic the origin of any stone
on the road, a frog, a tree or any insect or human being, can be found in the same beeja, which takes us back to
Divine Cosmic Energy. All these have emerged from the common genetic code.
This concept can be better understood with the help of theory of Reverse Engineering. If we are able to untie all the
knots of evolution, we can trace back our origin to Divine Cosmic Energy. Thus we can go back from any gross form
to miniaturized form. The power of beeja has now been recognized by modern day science also. Therefore, today the
science has invented Stem Cell preservation technique, wherein the umbilical cord of the baby is preserved in a
specific manner to treat incurable diseases, if any, in his future life.
The Beeja-mantras are very powerful because they contain highly concentrated and pure energy. Speaking in todays
parlance, these beeja-mantras are like nano-technology. Therefore, they have to be handled with utter care and
alertness. The way any skilled surgeon would perform the surgery on an infant. He would have to exert extra care &
caution. He will have to use precise instruments and will have to approach his task with extra precision.

So, our Sadguru or divine master will impart us the beeja mantra, only when he is cock sure about our ability to
sustain its power. That means, when he will realize that we have attained certain level of spiritual powers. Till such
time, the sadguru will impart the bigger mantras say of two lines or four lines, to work on gross scale.
