QUESTIONS

1. Write the geothermal energy types.

2. Why do we use geothermal heat pumps?
3. What are the average temperatures used for geoheat pumps in the shallow part
of the Earth?
4. What are the three different geoheat pump types in use?
5. How many ground coupled heat pump types are there in use? Write their names.
6. What are the loop types in the surface water heat pumps?
7. When we can prefer horizontal loops, in which conditions? What are the main
advantages of horizontal loops?
8. What are the main disadvantages of vertical loops?
9. What are the differences between open loops and closed loops, write at least
three items.
10. Write the loop fluids used in the closed loop systems.

ANSWERS
1. Hydrothermal energy, Earth energy, Hot Dry Rock energy, Geopressured energy,
Magma energy

2. Generally, we use it in winter when we want to heat our houses or the buildings
that we live in. On contrary, in summer, the heat is absorbed from inside and
transferred to the outside.
3. It changes from 7℃ to 13℃ in the shallow parts.

4. Ground-coupled heat pumps, Surface water heat pumps and Groundwater heat
pumps

5. There are vertical, horizontal and slinky types of pumps exist.

6. There are close and open loop types exist

7. To prefer horizontal loops, we need to have enough space for drilling or trenching.
The main advantage of horizontal loops is they are not expensive to build. In
addition, burrying deep bore holes are not required for this system.

8. To drill for the vertical loops has an expensive procedure. In addition, the required
equipments are special which makes the situation even worse.

9. In closed system, there is a feedback system while in the open system, there is not.
Another difference is construction. It is easy to construct the open loop system
whil it is more complex in closed system. Another difference is, reliability. The
open loop system is not very reliable compared to closed loop system.

10. The ordinary water should be used in the regions where the ground temperature
remains hot. For protection, corrosion-inhibited antifreeze solution can be used
since the freezing point is at -12℃. Besides, some alcohols like methanol, ethanol
can also be used.
