year, the district announced in a
statement issued Dec. 1.
The Hamilton School Board
accepted Cooke's retirement a meeting that evening. Cooke has been the
Hamilton district superintendent
since 1993. The School Board will
establish parameters and a timeline
for selecting a new superintendent at
its Dec. 21 meeting, according to a
statement from the district.
"Dr. Cooke has provided dedicated
service and worked collaboratively to
build a school district that reflects
the communitys expectations for
high performance," School Board
President Gabe Kolesari said. "She
worked in partnership with staff, parents, community members and business leaders to affect meaningful,
positive change."
According to a statement from the
district, there have been $50 million
of facility additions and renovations
while Cooke was superintendent.
The statement from the district
indicated that as superintendent

Cooke oversaw initiatives such as

school improvement, strategic and
tactical planning processes; the
Seniors & Students Volunteer
Program; and innovative programs to
increase achievement including the
high school block schedule, fouryear-old kindergarten, early reading
and early mathematics empowerment
programs, honors and advanced
placement programming. It also
noted that Cooke "promoted engagement of stakeholders" through focus
groups, quality interviews, formation
of a Business Advisory Council and
other groups that studied facilities,
budget, curriculum achievement and
attendance boundaries.
Cooke graduated from Marian
College in 1979 and got her master's
degree from UW-Milwaukee in 1984
and her doctorate from UW-Madison
in 1991. Cooke started her professional career in the Oconomowoc

Bud Walsh is retiring.

After 49 years in the jewelry business,
it is time to turn the keys over to a new generation.
Bud has been active in the community for all these years, and has come
to know so many of you by name. From class rings to engagement rings
and so many milestones in local families, Bud has enjoyed the privilege of
being a part of so many of these events through the generations.
Shawn Walsh, Bud's eldest son has worked by his side in the jewelry
business, watching the trends and industry change. During all that time their dedication to serving the
community has not changed. Whether helping a client choose the right gift, or creating something
entirely custom, Bud's commitment to value has never wavered. Bud has been active in Rotary and has
been recognized nationally as an Outstanding Young Man in Business.
"Although I have enjoyed these years working in a career I love, it is time for me to take a step in a
new direction. As I enter my fiftieth year in the jewelry business, It's time for me to spend more time with
my wife Mary Pat. We look forward to doing some traveling and spending more time with our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But don't be surprised to see me in the store from time to time, because
my heart is still in the business that has been so much a part of me for all these years."
"In celebration of my retirement we will be offering large discounts on all in-stock merchandise.
We have many beautiful pieces of jewelry on-hand for yourself or that special someone in your life."

Grocery store proposed in Colonial Plaza

The
Menomonee
Falls
Plan
Commission will get a first look at its
Dec. 8 meeting a proposal to demolish
the southern half of the Colonial Plaza
and construct a Fresh Thyme Market
grocery store in new space.
The Plan Commission meeting will be
held at the Menomonee Falls Village
Hall, W156 N8480 Pilgrim Road, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8.
According to a staff report, Colonial
Appleton Avenue LLC is proposing a
Fresh Thyme Market at N89 W16895
Appleton Avenue. The staff report noted
that the first phase of improvements at
the mall included the opening of Planet
Fitness on the north end of the site.
"The property owners are now proposing to demolish the southern portion

of Colonial Plaza and construct a 29,050

square foot Fresh Thyme Market grocery
store," the staff report states. "The Fresh
Thyme Market would adjoin the remaining Colonial Plaza and act as an anchor
tenant to the south with Planet Fitness
to the north. Approximately four tenant
spaces will remain between the two
anchor tenants; one of which will be
dedicated for George Webb."
According to the Web site for Fresh
Thyme Market, the core of the store's
offerings "is an abundant produce
department, overflowing with fruits and
vegetables, fresh from the farm, often
locally grown and much of it organic."
The website states that store has natural meat which is raised without hormones, seafood flown in daily and "bar-

rels full of natural and organic bulk

foods."
The village staff report states the
proposal is consistent with the Village
Comprehensive Plan and the zoning for
the site. Village staff has recommended
the proposal be supported by the commission.
"Although the proposed development does not meet all of the items contained in the Village Centre Master Plan,
as noted in this staff report, we believe
the project's benefits outweigh the
potential adverse impacts. Specifically,
although the project does not contain a
mixed-use building or a parking deck,
these items can possibly be addressed in
other locations within the Village
Centre," the staff report states. "We

believe the potential public benefits of

removing a portion of a multitenant
building with vacant tenant spaces, and
replacing it with a single-tenant grocery
store will add interest and people in the
downtown area, and help grow the local
businesses."
Also on the commission agenda is a
request from Brook Falls Veterinary
Hospital, N48 W14850 Lisbon Road, to
amend the conditional use permit to
allow boarding and grooming at the veterinary clinic. The proposal would allow
for the boarding small caged pets
indoors, but not dogs. It would also
allow for grooming services to be provided at the site.

Nov. 11 was a very special day

for Dave and Lisa Morbeck,
the owners of the ComForCare
Home Care business in
Jackson.

2012 and now employs more than 70

employees and serves more than 100 clients.
Dave said "to receive that award was validation for the hard work we put into it."

ComForCare provides in-home non-medical

assistance with a focus of keeping individuals living independently but safely within
their own homes. ComForCare is a nationwide franchise operation, and the Morbecks
office is located at 4466 Highway P, Suite
205 in Jackson.

"It's all about customer service," he said.

The business had been nominated for the

West Bend Chamber of Commerce medium
sized Business of the Year. During a recent
interview, Dave Morbeck noted that during
the dinner veterans were recognized, and
both he and Lisa are veterans -- Lisa served
four years in the US Navy while Dave
served eight years in the US Marine Corps.
Dave said it was "pretty neat" to be recognized as veterans at the event.
The business was also a finalist for the Small
sized Business of the Year award in 2014.
Upon learning they had been nominated for
medium sized Business of the Year, they
completed a questionnaire on the size of the
business and the number of employees.
While ComForCare was a finalist for this
year's award, winning the award was a new
experience.
"It was very much a surprise," Dave said.
He noted that there were seven businesses
also nominated for the award.
"To be chosen over these other companies
was a real honor," he said.
In a letter posted on the company's Facebook
page, Dave and Lisa stated: "We are incredibly humbled and honored to have been
selected for this award."
In the letter, the Morbecks noted the community efforts ComForCare is involved
with, including the West Bend Senior Center
Board, many senior and health fairs, the
Alzheimers Association Walk to End
Alzheimers planning committee, The
American Cancer Society Relay for Life
planning committee, the Greater Jackson
Business Alliance, and the West Bend,
Hartford,
and
Mequon-Thiensville
Chambers of Commerce, just to name a few.
Dave also hosts the monthly radio show,
"Living the Comfortable Life" on WTKM
104.9 FM.
"Not only is all this involvement good for
our business, it requires hard work.
However, we know our efforts are helping
individuals within in our community," the
Morbecks said in the letter.
While the Morbecks are thrilled with the
recent honor for ComForCare, the focus
remains looking forward and providing the
best service for their customers.
"We can't rest on our laurels," Dave
Morbeck said.
The business was started by the Morbecks in

He added what made it possible for the business to grow.

(L-R) Craig Farrell (West Bend Chamber Executive

Director), Jessica Wichowski (ComForCare Home
Care-Business Development Coordinator) Dave
and Lisa Morbeck (ComForCare Home Care
Owners).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Falls splits games

at home tourney
The Menomonee Falls girls basketball team split
games at the Blessings in a Backpack tournament
that they hosted Nov. 27-28.
Menomonee Falls beat Port Washington 48-32 the
opening night of the tournament. The Indians held
an 11-2 lead with 9:15 left in the first half following
a layup by Marissa Igunbor. Menomonee Falls then
scored eight straight points on the way to a 33-12
halftime lead. Igunbor led all scorers with 13 points
while Madison Grzesiak added 10 points.
In the tournament championship game the next
evening Menomonee Falls lost to Muskego 49-45. A
three-point basket by Sarah Anderson gave Muskego
a 9-6 lead at the 12:50 mark of the first half and
sparked an 8-2 run for the Warriors. Menomonee Falls
answered with a 5-2 run and trailed 19-14 at halftime.
Menomonee Falls continued its rally and took a
25-24 lead at the 12:57 mark of the second half after
Alyssa Marks converted two free throws. But
Anderson responded with a three-point basket on
the other end as Muskego scored seven straight
points. Menomonee Falls stayed close with Muskego
and took a 42-41 lead with 2:24 remaining as Karly
Volz converted a free throw. But a free throw by
Anderson with less than a minute remaining gave
the Warriors a 44-43 lead that they kept until the
buzzer.
Both Anderson and Menomonee Falls Madison
Grzesiak were leading scorers with 13 points each.
"They fought so hard. We'll get over the hump,"
Amundson said afterward. "I'm excited for the kids."
Amundson said the team learned from playing a
physical game against Muskego, which will help them
in the long run.

This is the second year of the Blessings in a

Backpack charity tournament, which benefits an
organization which assists children from low income
families by providing food in a backpack for the
weekends. Amundson said that last year approximately $1,000 was donated to the organization from
the tournament, while the school's Booster Club also
contributed to the organization.
This year's tournament was held the same weekend as the Brookfield Central Thanksgiving
Shootout, which drew several top teams from
Wisconsin and Illinois. For the Menomonee Falls tournament, Amundson said the Falls organizers were
seeking teams where the primary scoring was coming
from younger players who were returning from last
season.
"We were really happy that we targeted the teams
that (are) here," Amundson said.
Hamilton results
Hamilton scored the first 24 points against Little
Chute at the Brookfield Central Thanksgiving Classic
on the way to a 62-26 win. Taylor Klug led Hamilton
with 24 points.
The Chargers opened the Greater Metro
Conference portion of their schedule with a 66-54
win over Wauwatosa East. Ellie Sumiec led Hamilton
with 22 points.
Germantown results
The Germantown girls basketball team opened
the season with two wins. On Nov. 24, a three point
basket by Germantown as time expired gave the
Warhawks a 58-57 win over Kettle Moraine Lutheran.
On Dec. 1, the Warhawks beat Milwaukee Lutheran
88-16.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Falls opens season with two wins

Jerin Frey attempts a layup against

West Bend West Nov. 28.

The Menomonee Falls boys basketball team won its first two games of the
season. On Nov. 24, the Indians topped
Fond du Lac 70-57. Bryce McMurtry led
Menomonee Falls with 19 points.
Four days later Menomonee Falls
rallied to beat West Bend West 59-57.
West held a 34-29 halftime lead but
Menomonee Falls rallied to tie the
score at 37-37 on two free throws by
Justin Gruber. Matt Korner answered
for West with a three point basket at
the other end of the court while Matt
Tomey converted two free throws to
give the Spartans a 42-37 lead with
13:12 remaining. Menomonee Falls

responded with an 11-2 scoring run

that gave the Indians a 51-49 lead
with 4:19 remaining after Jerin Frey
converted a layup.
Kyle Wilde led the West comeback,
as he scored a basket with 1:55
remaining and then converted two
three point baskets with less than 40
seconds remaining for West. His last
shot came up just short as the buzzer
sounded.
"It was a good comeback by us and
we've got to take care of the final five
minutes better, but it's a learning
process," Menomonee Falls Coach Ben
Farley said.

He added he liked the way his team

responded to adverse moments during
the game.
The Indians lost at Plymouth Dec.
1, 75-60. Jaden Champion led
Menomonee Falls with 18 points.
Hamilton results
Hamilton opened the season with a
71-41 win over Messmer at the Fresh
Coach Classic at the UW-Milwaukee
Klotsche Center. Jacob Hartung led
Hamilton with 20 points. The Chargers
opened last week with a 52-36 win
over Watertown Dec. 1. Hartung led
Hamilton with 28 points.

Village proposes adjustments in East Main Street redevelopment plan

BY THOMAS J.MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

A "branding" of the area on Main

Street east of Pilgrim Road is part of the
changes in the works by the village of
Menomonee Falls to address changes in
how the area has been redeveloped.
The item was discussed by the
Community Development Authority at a
Nov. 30 meeting. The area along Pilgrim
Road east of Main Street and west of
Fountain Boulevard is part of the village's Planned Development District.
The original plan approved by the village in 2008 called for an area of high
density residential units along Main
Street to Fond du Lac Avenue.
" As individual projects were proposed along Main Street, primarily near
the Pilgrim Road and Main Street intersection, the Plan was amended to
accommodate these redevelopments,"
the village Department of Community
Redevelopment stated in a report to the
Community Development Authority.
The changes included the Walmart
Neighborhood Market, Kwik Trip, Falls

Wash and Lube and a commercial land

use amendment.
"The 2008 plan with what they originally proposed and the current redevelopment with the Neighborhood
Market,Kwik Trip and some of the other
land use amendments, they just don't
really mix as well," village Planning
Technician Gabriel Gilbertson said. He
explained the village is looking at how
remaining lands can be redeveloped "to
have some context of what's existing."
Gilbertson said the village currently
has two different plans in the same plan
and is now seeking to have one solid
plan that is attractive to developers on
the remaining parcels in the area.
In a document to the Community
Development Authority, the village proposed an "intensive and focused" marketing campaign for the area, with the
stated purpose to "implement changes
rapidly throughout the Main Street
Redevelopment Area to increase awareness of revitalization efforts and development potential."
The strategies proposed included

amending the Planned Development

District 2, developing branding for the
"East Main Street corridor," creating an
East Main Street revitalization grant for
facade renovations and landscaping
projects, partnering with local businesses to host an East Main Street open
house event and creating and distributing a marketing packet identifying targeted redevelopment sites.
According to the document presented to the Community Development
Authority, the Planned Development
District for the area "will be simplified
to allow for a wider variety of uses that
compliments the grander vision for the
corridor while expediting approval
processes." The proposed branding
strategy will include banners on light
poles including words such as "rediscover" or "explore" the East Main Street
area.
Gilbertson said the branding strategy is not official, but the East Main
Street title will seek the give the area
its own character and name separate
from the downtown Village Centre area

just west in the historic center of

Menomonee Falls.
"When you say East Main Street, you
know where exactly in Menomonee Falls
we're talking about,"Gilbertson said.
Gilbertson said the Community
Development Authority liked what they
heard on Nov. 30. As a result, village
staff will fine tune what was proposed
into a finalized document that can be
reviewed
by
the
Community
Development Authority board. Staff will
go through the Planned Development
District 2 plan and see where it needs to
be amended and updated to reflect current amendments.
"That's the whole plan with this is
recognizing multiple sites that are more
or less shovel ready that developers can
come in and (they're) not acquiring a
bunch of land and organizing land. It's
more, so (developers) can come in, this
is what we have to offer, this is where
we think development can occur, a getting them through the process so they
can do what they need to do,"
Gilbertson said.

Its that time of year again, and The UPS Store is here to help! When shipping to
friends & loved ones this season, there are a few things to remember. Ship early to
give your presents extra time to arrive under the tree! We recommend shipping packages you want to arrive in time for the holidays by Monday, December 14th. With the
increase in shipping volume and the chance of winter storms during the holidays,
most delivery dates are not guaranteed. We cant ship any alcohol, so when choosing
that perfect local gift basket, be sure to stick to the meats & cheeses. Fragile gifts are
best packed in bubble wrap and packed in the center of a box to provide maximum
protection. Or let our Packaging Experts know which gifts need extra TLC when packaged. Packages are subject to lots of movement & vibration, so be sure to remove batteries so they dont get drained during shipment. Lastly, since packages travel in
unheated containers, avoid shipping liquids that could freeze during shipment.
