Introduction

The concept of block pavements for roads is

not new. Evidence of such pavements using
bricks laid in bitumen mortar, can still be
seen in Babylon and surrounding areas,
where as early as 3000 BC.
The Road Development Agency, in its quest
for alternative and cheaper, yet durable road
construction technologies, has embarked on
the Pave Zambia Project which will be
executed through the utilization of concrete
block paving and cobblestone technology to
repair the existing urban and township roads
as a suitable solution on our urban roads.
This project expects to rehabilitate 2000km
of the township road network .

Project Objectives

To carry out the rehabilitation and

construction of 2,000km of urban roads
using Concrete Paving Blocks and
Cobblestone Technology as opposed to the
conventional
technologies
in
road
construction.

To create thousands of jobs for Zambian

youths, impart skills in road construction and
to empower Zambians by developing small
to medium entrepreneurs.
To develop skills and knowledge in the use of
cobblestone technology and its application
to the paved road project in Zambia.

Advantages of Paving Blocks

Good durability and long service life;
The many colours and textures available for
the blocks allow for more versatility in looks
and styles.
The interlocking action of the blocks
facilitates far better load distribution than
conventional methods;
In the event of changes or innovations being
made in the paved area, any reclaimed blocks
are not wasted, but may be used elsewhere;
Add-ons are easily made in any size to match
existing paving;
The maintenance costs of blocks are a
fraction of those for conventional methods;
Blocks are more resistant to chemical attacks
or fire than asphalt, particularly in case of
petro-chemicals)

Project Benefits

Creating a minimum 20,000 jobs thereby

impacting on a reduction in Poverty
Spurring of Economic Activities such as;
(a) Supply of Aggregates for construction
(b) Supply of Cement
(c) Supply of River Sand and
(d) Kerbs
(e) Transportation of materials to work sites
Improvement of mobility in communities in
urban areas
