POINT PLEASANT BEACH - Jerry Meaney was at the end of Broadway Boulevard,
looking at the ocean, when he saw the first whales breach.
A handful of humpbacks according to witnesses who identified them were foraging on bait fish right outside of Manasquan Inlet. Bystanders said they put on quite a
show.
They (the whales) came out of the water several times. They swam north of the inlet,
about 200 to 300 yards offshore then circled back, said Meaney, a Point Pleasant Beach
resident and hobbyist photographer.
Meaney, who is also the captain of the Point Pleasant Beach First Aid Squad, was talking to a friend when the wildlife scene unfolding in the ocean got his attention.
I said I gotta go, and I raced down to the jetty, said Meaney.

Probe criticizes
N.J.s online tax
lien system
SHANNON MULLEN @MULLENAPP
TRENTON - New Jersey officials granted a foreign-owned company and its partner a virtual monopoly over the states lucrative online tax-lien sale program, after the firms worked behind the scenes to
craft the programs parameters, a state probe has
found.
The foreign-owned firm, Realauction.com LLC,
made hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on the
deal, even though it hadnt registered to do business in
New Jersey and wasnt paying state income taxes, the
State Commission of Investigation said.
The SCIs report focuses on the unusual regulatory process that resulted in Realauction and its partner, R.O.K. Industries Inc., being designated by the
New Jersey Department of Community Affairs in 2011
as the states only authorized online tax-lien auction
service vendors. The firms have used that exclusive
status to secure approximately 90 no-bid contracts
with cities and towns across the state, including several municipalities in the Shore area, generating about $1
