Objective: To briefly review the George Lucas Educational Foundation and take a quick
look at Project-Based Learning through a video and short class discussion. The lecture on
the GLEF will provide students with a working idea of what GLEF is about. They will be
encouraged to discover more through their own research. The end discussion will help
students understand how life experiences outside of the classroom can help inspire
change in the classroom.
Materials/Equipment: This lesson will be using: a PC computer, an overhead projector
and screen, and a white board with markers, and handouts explaining the keys to success
for PBL.
Instruction:
Slide 1: Begin with introductions and state topic.
Slide 2: Discuss reasoning behind choosing to teach this topic.
Slide 3: Introduce topics of the lesson.
Slide 4: Review George Lucas inspiration and goals for his foundation.
Slide 5: Discuss the vision of GLEF.
Slide 6: Discuss the mission of GLEF.
Slide 7: Give a quick overview of the two divisions of the GLEF and let students
know Edutopia is the focus of this lesson.
Slide 8: Review in brief the Core Strategies of Edutopia.
Slide 9: Show the video (roughly 3 minutes and 30 seconds) and let students
know where they can go for more videos.
Slide 10: Initiate discussion about deep learning experiences, begin with a
personal example from myself, and end with about 3-5 students giving examples
of their own. End by stating these simple yet memorable examples are the driving
inspiration behind PBL.
Closure: Relay the fact to students that such simple experiences show how we have to
identify problems and find solutions in the real world. Emphasize how this real-world
way of learning should be brought in to the classroom through PBL and help students
become true life-long learners.

Outline for Lesson Plan:

What is the George Lucas Educational Foundation and how is Project-Based Learning a
superior style of learning?
Slide 1
Introduce myself and try to lighten the mood.
State the two primary focuses of the presentation: GLEF and PBL
o State what PBL stands for
Tell students they will have a moment to think about what they know about the
topic while I discuss my reason for choosing the topic in the next slide.
Slide 2
State that I am an alumni of East Career and Technical Academy and that I have
been doing PBLs since my very first days at the school.
Let them know that my curiosity on the topic came from my feeling that it was
never properly utilized.
Tell them my renewed interests come from wanting to approach the issue as a
teacher.
*Ask one of the magnet school students/parents to give an opinion on PBL*
Slide 3
Give an overview of the topics and activities that will accompany the
presentation.
Slide 4
Describe George Lucas dilemma as a student and father being curious but bored
in the classroom.
Describe George Lucas solution to the dilemma in the form of his foundation.
State Lucas goal: identifying and spreading innovation, replicable, and
evidence-based approaches to helping K-12 students learn better.
Emphasis of a problem, solution, and goal will help students understand the
mission behind the foundation.
Slide 5
State the vision in a brief thought to quickly get a point across: improved
education is essential to the survival of the human race.
Slightly joke that it is a bit dramatic but quickly emphasize that the problems of
the world do merit our sincere attention.
Describe the world GLEF wants to see: a world of creativity, inspiration, and
ambition where people work together towards a common goal of improving lives
through education.
Slide 6
Emphasize that the overall mission of GLEF is to CHANGE education in primary
and secondary schools so that students are life-long learners.

Eldridge 3

Let the students know that GLEF wants knowledge, attitudes, skills, and beliefs
to be effectively gained and applied.
*Ask class if people ever felt as if their education failed to make them life long
learners* Let them know GLEF wants to change that for new students.

Slide 7
Review the two different divisions and their differences to achieve the overall
mission.
Let students know, once again, that Edutopia and their Core Strategies will be the
focus of the following slides. Also, let them know that the discussion will be
based on PBL.
Slide 8
Review the Core Strategies, but skip PBL and let students know well be talking
about that in a moment.
Slide 9
Let the class know they will be watching a short video clip overviewing PBL.
*watch video*
Instruct students to go to Edutopias YouTube channel and find videos on a
variety of topics that will aid them as teachers.
Slide 10
Instruct students to think about a time where they had an experience of deep
learning.
o Let them know it can be anything in our out of school and can be simple.
Go over my personal learning experience when playing the video game, Star
Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
o I will review the problem I faced, how I used new research and prior
experiences to craft solutions, and then applied my solutions.
o I will also show how this experience stayed with me throughout the years
and taught me lessons I use to this day.
Gather 3-5 learning experiences from students and write them on the board.
Instruct them to keep their answers brief.
Give closing lesson.
Slide 11
Thank students for their time and wish them good luck!
Closure: We can all see how problems in the real world require a process to solve them.
Sometimes, even the simplest of challenges in our lives provide us with knowledge,
skills, and memories that last a lifetime. The goal of GLEF in pushing for PBL is to
emulate these experiences in the classroom to give students the drive and ability to be life
long learners.
