MLM Methodology
Students have different levels of prior learning and different learning abilities, allowing
students to learn new material at different paces. CTI has adopted the Mastery Learning
Methodology (MLM) so that students can pace their studies to suit their experience and
ability one module at a time, sequentially (modular approach).
For example, on your first day the student started with the Computer Literacy module. If
youre a full-time student this module is 15 full-time days which is 3 weeks (exclude
weekends). If youre a part-time student then youll have 15 part-time sessions. Should you
finish the Computer Literacy assessments and exams within 2 weeks (10 days). You therefore
finished the module 5 days prior to the intended finishing date. This means youre 5 days
ahead on your overall schedule. Directly after your exam you may start with the next
module. So no time is wasted. You thus have an additional 5 days to complete the next
module.
Being ahead of schedule has several advantages. You can for instance spend more time on
some of the more difficult modules later on, or if you remain ahead of schedule until the end
of your qualification you may use the remaining days to study additional MLM modules for
free. Youll get an additional certificate listing the additional modules provided theses
modules were passed.

There is also a danger of falling behind schedule. Lets go back to our previous example
with the Computer Literacy module. Lets assume you found the work really tough and by
the last day, day 15, you realise youre not ready to write the exam. You are allowed to use
another day, or several days, to prepare for the exam. If you write the exam on Day 20 it
means youve lost 5 days on your overall schedule. Youve borrowed 5 days from the next
module so youll have 5 less days to complete your next module. This doesnt seem too
bad, but what if you find the next module difficult or if the volume of work is just too great
and you cannot catch up to your original schedule? If you reach your qualification end date
and you havent finished all the modules this will negatively affect you in various ways.
You will need to pay additional fees should you wish to continue. Students therefore need
to stay ahead, or on schedule.
You will not attend lectures in MLM, you will follow the study guide. For instance you will
be asked to complete compulsory exercises, projects and tests before being able to write
an exam. There are lecturers to guide and assist student with the work. The lecturers are
available on the floor daily and students can ask them for assistance with the work, theyll
mark your exercises (3 at a time), and help you with goal setting, and so forth.
Success will require consistent, hard work in both theory and practical sections of all
modules. If youre not prepared to put in the required effort.

Recording student attendance

Students enter the MLM learning environment
using a biometric fingerprint scanner, that they
have been registered to. Once registered, a
record of attendance is kept.
Requesting a student attendance record
Parents may request a detailed log of students
attendance by emailing the student lecturer.

Official MLM Access Hours

Full-Time Students: Mon to Thurs, 08:00 16:30
Fri, 08:00-16:00
Part-Time Students: Mon & Thurs 17:30 20:30
Unofficial MLM Access
Full time students may arrive from 07:00, daily
Students should study within the learning environment for a minimum of 120 hours
per month. The qualifications are designed in such a way that full-time students need
to study in the learning environment for at least 6 hours each day. Both MLM staff
and students will have lunch from 12:30 to 13:30.
Besides attending part-time classes, part-time students are expected to study for at
least an additional 11 hours at home each week.
Students that do not spend adequate time studying within the learning environment
do not cope with their qualification. Also in order to complete the qualification,
contact time is needed with the lecturer. Contact time includes having exercises
marked, writing pre-tests, doing LABS, attending workshops, student progress
management meetings and so forth.

Pre-tests/ Practice Tests/Exams/Practical Exams

Before youll be allowed to write your exam, you first need to have all
compulsory exercises signed off by a lecturer, projects handed in (if
applicable), and you have to complete pre-tests. A pre-test is merely a tool
that is used to determine how much you have studied and also to help you
prepare for the exam. Most pre-test questions wont feature in the exam, so
there is no point in memorizing the questions. You have to score 70% in
order to pass the pre-test. The exam pass mark is 60%.
More than 2 pre-tests may only be written if consent is given by the
academic coordinator and each case will be treated on merit. Failing any pretest indicates that youre either that the student is not studying hard enough
or you may need additional guidance from a lecturer.
Should you pass your theory pre-test with 85% or more, you may opt to
write the exam immediately thereafter, if capacity permits.

Most pre-tests and exams are done on a PC which will use a

multiple choice format. See pre-test example below:

How do I book a pre-test / practice test?

Part-time students, you may start a pre-test between 17:30
and 18:00. To book a pre-test you must email by 14:30 on
one day prior to ensure everything is set up and ready upon
arrival. No pre-tests may be written if there was no booking
made.

Full-time students must book a pre-test with a lecturer. Pretests need to be booked by 14:30 the day before intending
to write. No booking = No Pre-test. The schedule will go up
by 16:00 daily for the next day. It remains the students duty
to ensure that they check the scheduled time they will write

How do I book an exam?

Complete an exam booking slip. These slips are located at the lecturers
desks. It looks like this:

When should I write my next exam?

To be on schedule see the target dates on the academic transcript, the
actual date and target date must correspond.
Academic transcripts will be email once a month, or on request.

When is my qualifications academic end date?

This date may change

- if you handed in a medical certificate (5 consecutive sick days) and received

credits.
- If the campus allocates credits
then your revised academic end date will extend with the number of days that
you were booked off.

Not Finishing On Schedule

If you reach your revised end date but havent completed your qualification, you have 3 options:
OPTION 1: Complete the outstanding modules by extending your studies This is done by signing a new
contract to complete the outstanding modules. Extended studies contracts can be collected from the
accounts office. Each contract must be signed by yourself and your sponsor, and returned or emailed to
the academic coordinator, and the applicable payment must be made BEFORE your extended studies
period starts.
OPTION 2: Inform the academic coordinator that you are discontinuing your qualification. Then get an
application form from the exam administrator and apply for a certificate see options below:
i)
ii)

Apply for a general certificate which lists all the modules that you completed successfully.
If youre an ISE/ISID student and have finished up until your main language, you can apply for a Short
Learning Programme certificate. On top of this you can also apply for a general certificate for any
additional modules that you may have completed.
iii) If youre an ISNE student and youve completed up until Personal Skills, you can apply for an Short
learning Programme IT Engineering certificate.
OPTION 3: Indicate that you wish to come back at a later stage to complete the qualification. Just note
that youll be subjected to a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. This applies to everyone whether you come back 3 months later or 3 years later. Ask the academic coordinator for more info.
