answer is nothing less than new heavens and

new earth.

On November 1st, 1755, Lisbon, Portugal, was

struck by a massive earthquake. It was All
Saints Day and because of that all the
churches were filled to capacity with
thousands of worshippers. Within six minutes
30 churches were utterly destroyed and over
15,000 people died. Those who survived ran
down to the waterfront in hopes to get on one
of the ships and escape the aftershocks.
Those that did were struck by 3 massive
tsunami waves that swept over the city killing
thousands more. In addition to all this, candle
lamps and cooking oils toppled over in the
aftershocks and great fires raged for days
killing more and more people. In total, within
the span of less than a week, more than
30,000 people died, and one of the worlds
greatest shipping ports was in ruins.
Watching from France the philosopher Voltaire
saw this tragedy as proof that no reasonable
person could believe in a good and just God.
Voltaire mocked the faith of the church and
men like Alexander Pope in England who said
that we live in the best of all possible worlds.
Voltaire said, Isnt it painfully obvious that the
world isnt right and certainly not the best of all
possible places? If this is the best of all
possible worlds, then what of the others?
Looking at what happened then, and what is
happening now, I think that some of us would
sympathize with Voltaires struggle. In a world
where bad things continually seem to happen
to good people it keeps getting harder to
maintain the kind of optimism that Alexander
Popes had.
The world is a hard place to live in, but hard
does not equate to hopeless in Gods
economy. Because God is at work and
continuing to do something about it, and his

Isaiah 66:22-23 For as the new heavens

and the new earththat I make shall remain
before me, says the Lord,so shall your
offspring and your name remain. From new
moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to
Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship
before me, declares the Lord.
Friends, God is not just patching up a broken
world every time it breaks down. He is out to
remake it, totally, wonderfully, and on a scale
we cannot fathom, for all of eternity. Gods
answer to the prayers that we pray for revival,
restoration and reconciliation is nothing less
than, new heavens and a new earth
We will only truly move toward that target
when we worship God as God. In Isaiah 66:23
it says clearly that all flesh shall come to
worship before me. This is emphasized by
the fact that the final chapter of the book of
Isaiah is primarily about worship. The gravest
problem in our world today is false worship.
Isnt that the primary complaint in Romans
1:21 which says, For although they knew
God, they did not honor him as God or give
thanks to him
What the prophet Isaiah wants to tell us is that
we enter into Gods promised future through
true present worship, and by doing that, the
church becomes a living testimony to Gods
plan and purposes.
When a church worships and hopes fully in the
majesty of Christ and His work of salvation, it
becomes a foreshadowing of something
greater, a prophetic witness of His word, a
living invitation to join in a promised future:
new heavens and new earth - the only
glorious message that is guaranteed to
succeed.
Join us this Sunday as we start the Book of
First Peter and look at what it means to
Hope Fully in a world that feels hopeless.
