Metronidazole is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial and protozoal infections. It works by interacting with DNA which destroys the helical structure and inhibits protein synthesis, killing susceptible organisms. The patient was prescribed 60mg of metronidazole IV every 8 hours on July 19th for prophylaxis prior to surgery. Potential side effects include GI disturbances, numbness/tingling, and elevated liver enzymes. Nurses should monitor for allergic reactions, report severe side effects, and inform the patient their urine may darken.
