Element 4.2 Mobilize Community Resources Activity: Samantha Funding the Arts Grant Time: 3 hours Artifacts: SFA Cover Letter, Grant Application Description: The Samantha Funding the Arts Foundation is a wonderful organization created to honor a young woman in our community who passed away at age 21 due to a car accident. Her parents started the foundation to honor Sam (who was an artist) and keep her memory alive through supporting the arts in our schools and community. Their vision is to supplement funding for the arts in our local schools and community, inspire young artists, create new arts programs, and keep the arts alive in our schools. They raise money through various events, such as their annual Corn Hole Tournament, to be able to financially support the arts in our schools. One way they provide their support is through the SFA Grant. Reflection: The SFA Grant is straightforward and simple. They want to know what you would like to purchase and how it will be used to promote the arts in your school. Last year I requested funds to purchase Music Express Magazine and Activate Magazine to enrich my program with new songs and lessons that I knew the kids would enjoy. SFA graciously obliged, and my students and I enjoyed our new materials all year long! Ill likely request them again this year. I also helped point our new art teacher to the SFA Grant and supported her in filling it out to receive some much-needed items for her classroom. As a teacher and administrator, its important to know what resources are available in your community and to utilize them to make the most of your school programs.
