Standard 4.0 Community Collaboration

Element 4.2 Mobilize Community Resources
Activity: Arts Fair Planning and Rehearsals
Time: 40 hours
Artifact: Fine Arts Committee Meeting Minutes
Description: Each year the fine arts department comes together to plan and present
the Garrett County Student Arts Fair. Student artwork from grades PK-12 is chosen
and displayed and select students in grades 4-12 perform in county Honor Band and
Honor Chorus groups. The arts program in Garrett County Public Schools is supported
by the BOE, Garrett County Arts Council, Samantha Funding the Arts, and Garrett
Lakes Arts Festival.
Reflection: The Garrett County Arts Fair is a great collaboration of community
resources. So many hands are involved in this event. It is truly a wonderful
celebration of the arts! The planning begins as soon as one years event is complete.
The arts teachers and community representatives meet to debrief. We discuss what
worked and what could be improved for the next year. A date is chosen for the next
event, and the cycle begins all over again. At the beginning of the school year we
decide on a theme. Music is selected for the honor groups and the art teachers begin
saving student artwork to showcase at the Arts Fair. As the event draws nearer,
rehearsals are planned for the performing arts students and the art teachers begin
matting the 2D artwork. The drama groups also convene to decide on a short scene
to perform either from a musical theyve produced or something theyve prepared in
drama class. The crunch begins and emotions run high. Despite all the stress and
worry, the event goes off with flying colors, soliciting praise and commendations from
the community. Its always worth it!
