HOW TO READ CONFIGURATION DIAGRAMS

HOW TO READ CONFIGURATION DIAGRAMS

M1801000200566

The wiring harness diagrams clearly show the connector locations and harness routings at each site on
actual vehicles.
Denotes connector No.
The same connector No. is used throughout the circuit diagrams to facilitate connector location searches.
The first alphabetical symbol indicates the location site of the connector and a number that follows is the unique number.
Numbers are usually assigned to parts in clockwise order on the diagram.
Example: A-19
Number specific to connector (serial number)
Connector location site symbol
A: ENGINE COMPARTMENT
B: ENGINE AND TRANSAXLE
C: DASH PANEL
D: FLOOR AND ROOF
E: DOOR
F: LIFTGATE

A-19
Denotes ground point.
Same ground number is used throughout circuit
diagrams to facilitate search of ground point.
Refer to GROUP 70 SINGLE PART INSTALLATION
POSITION - GROUND MOUNTING LOCATIONS
for details of ground points.
FRONT
WIRING
HARNESS
(RH)

Denotes harness name.

A-18
Denotes a section covered by a
corrugated tube.

A-17

The mark
shows the
standard mounting position
of wiring harness.

A-16

Denotes the color of the tube

(If not specified, it is black).
R: Red
Y: Yellow

The number of connector pins and the connector color

(except milk white)* are shown for ease of retrieval.

A-15

Example: (2-B)
Connector color
(milk white if no color is indicated)

WARNINGS REGARDING SERVICING OF SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) EQUIPPED VEHICLES

WARNING

Improper service or maintenance of any component of the SRS, or any SRS-related component, can lead to
personal injury or death to service personnel (from inadvertent firing of the air bag) or to the driver and
passenger (from rendering the SRS inoperative).
Service or maintenance of any SRS component or SRS-related component must be performed only at an
authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.
MITSUBISHI dealer personnel must thoroughly review this manual, and especially its GROUP 52B - Supplemental
Restraint System (SRS) before beginning any service or maintenance of any component of the SRS or any
SRS-related component.
NOTE
The SRS includes the following components: SRS air bag control unit, SRS warning light, front impact sensors, air bag module,
clock spring, and interconnecting wiring. Other SRS-related components (that may have to be removed/installed in connection
with SRS service or maintenance) are indicated in the table of contents by an asterisk (*).

Inside rear view mirror with compass and

temperature display
The compass direction or temperature will appear
on the upper right of the mirror when the switch at
the center of the inside rear view mirror is
pressed.

M1521000100173

The compass detects the vehicle direction with

the geomagnetic sensor built in the inside rear
view mirror, and displays eight directions with the
LCD.
The ambient air temperature meter calculates the
information from the thermo meter sensor, and
displays the temperature with the LCD.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPASS AND TEMPRATURE DISPLAY DIAGNOSIS

M1521004200053

If the compass and temperature do not function,

there may be trouble in the electrical system, or the
calibration of the compass may be faulty.

COMPASS AND TEMPERATURE DISPLAY DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLESHOOTING

STRATEGY
Use these steps to plan your diagnostic strategy. If
you follow them carefully, you will be sure that you
have exhausted most of the possible ways to find a
inside rear view mirror with compass and temperature display fault.
1. Gather information from the customer.

M1521003200038

2. Verify that the condition described by the customer exists.

3. Find the malfunction by following the Symptom
Chart.
4. Verify malfunction is eliminated.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE 2: The vehicle Direction displayed on the compass is incorrect.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION (COMMENT)

OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE METER

ELECTRONIC COMPASS CIRCUIT
Refer to P.52A-5.
.

CIRCUIT OPERATION
The vehicle direction is displayed by the output of the
geomagnetic sensor built into the outside temperature meter and electronic compass.

The vehicle magnetism tends to be disturbed particularly at such places as tunnel, railway crossing, area
along railway, elevated road, urban area crowded
with high-storied buildings, area above subway, etc.
If disturbed, the driving direction marker will fluctuate.
.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
The calibration of the compass or compass variance
failed.

TROUBLE SHOOTING HINTS

CIRCUIT OPERATION

Malfunction of the inside rear view mirror.

Refer to P.52A-5.

DIAGNOSIS
Try to calibrate the compass at another location.
1. Move the vehicle to a wide, flat location.
2. Try again to calibrate the compass.
NOTE: If the calibration is correct, the following causes can
be assumed.
Calibration is difficult due to the magnet direction and
direction of the vehicle at the start of calibration.
There is a disturbing magnetic field in the area.
If the calibration is correct, check that the malfunction is eliminated.
If the calibration is incorrect, replace the inside rear view mirror

PROCEDURES FOR CALIBRATING THE
COMPASS

M1521007600016

1. Press the "COMP" button. The visual display is now in

compass mode and the vehicle's directional heading (N, NE,
E, SE, S, SW, W and NW) will be displayed.
Pressing the "COMP" button a second time will turn off the
visual display.

AC003253

2. If the display reads "C," there may be a strong magnetic field

interfering with the compass. In this case, the compass may
need calibration.

3. Drive the vehicle in a circle at about 5 mph (8km/h) or less

until the display reads a direction.

PROCESSES FOR ADJUSTING THE COMPASS

VARIANCE

M1521007700013

1. Under certain circumstances, such as during a long distance

cross-country trip, it will be necessary to adjust for compass
variance.
Compass variance is the difference between earth's
magnetic north and true geographic north. If not adjusted to
account for compass variance, the compass could give false
readings.
2. Press the "COMP" button for more than 3 seconds. The
current zone number will appear in the display.

AC003256

AC003257

3. Find the current location and variance zone number on the

map on the left.
4. Press the "COMP" button until the new zone number
appears in the display.
After you stop pressing the button in, the display will show a
compass direction within a few seconds.
NOTE: Do not install a ski rack, antenna, etc. which are
attached to the vehicle by means of a magnet. They affect
the operation of the compass.
NOTE: The compass may not indicate the correct compass
point in the places shown below:
Tunnels
Areas along he railroad
Underpass
Transforming station
Area with many office buildings
Area over the subway
Up or down a steep hill
The compass returns to the correct compass point when the
vehicle moves to an area where the geomagnetism in stabilized.

AUTO-DIMMING FEATURE TEST

M1521007800010

1. Be sure the ignition is on and that the mirror is on. The green
LED light to the right of the main display switch will be lit
when the mirror is on. If it's not, depress the "TEMP" side of
the main display switch for 15 seconds.

2. Cover the forward-facing light sensor on the back of the

mirror with a black cloth.
3. While in a well-lit area, make sure light strikes the sensor on
the front of the mirror, simulating glare from vehicles behind
you. The mirror will dim within 2 minutes if the testing for the
first time. If the mirror does not dim, replace the inside rear
