Application of Scientific Method on a Sample of Marbles

Introduction:

In our very first experiment we conducted scientific method on a sample of marbles to

understand and implement the practical uses and significance of scientific methods to validate
any research. A bowl of different colored marbles in unequal proportion was provided to us
and we were asked to observe and conduct scientific method on those. A scientific method
consists of the following seven steps:

1. Observation
2. Form a question
3. Perform a background research
4. Form a hypothesis
5. Test the hypothesis
6. Analyze the data and draw conclusion
7. Report the results

We have chosen the suitable steps for conducting our experiment and a useful understanding
of each of the steps of scientific method was achieved.

Observation:

Initially we observed a medium sized bowl full of different colored marbles. The bowl had a
mixture of seven different colors: Yellow, Orange, Green, Peach, Red, Purple and White. The
marbles looked more or less similar in size and shape and the distribution of different colors
seemed disproportionate or in unequal ratio.

Forming a Question:

From our observation we unanimously became curious with one question and that was whether
the different colored marbles were equally distributed in the bowl.

Forming a Hypothesis:

With a general discussion and observation we prepared our hypothesis that suggested the red
colored marbles were the highest in number in the mixture of bowl.

Testing the hypothesis:

This step was the action phase of our experiment. We separated the marbles into seven different
groups as per their color. We counted each group of marbles individually and noted down the
count results. We cross checked our results thrice to be more precise and thorough.

Data Analysis:
In total we had exactly 100 marbles of different colors. The following table shows the
percentage of marbles in each color:

Total Percentage of Marbles (%) 100%

Percentage of Red colored Marbles (%) 21%
Percentage of Yellow colored Marbles (%) 20%
Percentage of Green colored Marbles (%) 15%
Percentage of Orange colored Marbles (%) 12%
Percentage of Peach colored Marbles (%) 11%
Percentage of Purple colored Marbles (%) 11%
Percentage of White colored Marbles (%) 10%

From the table above we can conclude that:

• The total percentage of marble is 100%
• Red colored marbles are highest in number. It is 21% of the total percentage of marbles.
• Yellow colored marbles are 20% of the total percentage of marbles.
• Green colored marbles are 15% of the total percentage of marbles.
• Orange colored marbles are 12% of the total percentage of marbles.
• Peach & Purple colored marbles are 11% of the total percentage.
• White colored marbles have the lowest percentage of 10% of the total percentage of
marbles.

By looking at the graph, it is visible that:

• Red colored marbles have the 1st ranking

• Yellow marbles have the 2nd ranking
• Green marbles have the 3rd ranking
• White marbles have the lowest ranking

Conclusion:

Our hypothesis was proven correct as red-colored marbles were the highest in number in our
sample of marbles. This experiment taught us the scientific method of conducting a test.
