TOPIC:

Carbon Fiber and Its

Application

Carbon
Fiber:
-It is also called graphite
fiber.

-It is

produced by extruding precursor of

acrylics , pitch or specially purified
viscose rayon into filament , then
carbonizes to get carbon.
-It was first created by Roger Bacon
in 1958.
-Each strand is 0.005-0.010 mm
thick in diameter.
-The trade name is tenax and
producer is Germany.

Properties of
carbon fiber

High strength to weight ratio

Good rigidity
Corrosion resistant
Electrically
conductive
Fatigue resistant
Good tensile strength
but brittle
High thermal
conductivity in some
forms
Low coefficient of
thermal expansion
Non poisonous
Biologically inert
X-ray permeable
Relatively Expensive
Strands of Carbon is thinner than
human hair.
Long working life.

Raw materials of Carbon

Fiber

About 90% of the

carbon fibers produced
are made from
polyacrylonitrile (PAN).
The remaining 10% are
made from rayon or
petroleum pitch.
All of these materials
are organic polymers,
characterized by long
strings of molecules
bound .
