PREFACE
We prepared the Redhouse Dictionary of Art Terms and Concepts,
the second book of the Redhouse Thematic Dictionaries Series, as an
enriched guide of art terms that will be useful for anyone involved in
art. Consisting of many English and Turkish terms related to various
areas of art, this reference work comes forth with an outstanding
design including original illustrations and information boxes.
We included not the senses that are used in everyday language
but those frequently used within the context of art. Consequently, the
common meanings of many words are not present in this dictionary.
Concerning terms with multiple meanings within the context of art,
we mentioned the definitions that are used more often before those
that are used less frequently.
We separated synonyms with commas and used semicolons to
separate equivalents or renderings that, though similar in meaning,
are not synonymous. Arabic numerals are used to mark the beginning
of senses. We set off explanatory material in parentheses whenever
necessary.
When a hyphenated word at the end of a line of type had to be
separated at its point of hyphenation, we placed the hyphen at the
beginning of the next line of type instead of placing it at the end of
that line of type.

We took into consideration the Turkish spelling rules recommended

in the Yazm Klavuzu published by the Turkish Language Association
in 2000.

Redhouse Dictionary of Art Terms and Concepts is based on

American usage.

Abstract Art
Soyut Sanat
Abstract art is generally considered to be the kind of art that
involves creating the elements of form such as color, hue, line, and
mass through a non-figurative and subjective style, making sure
that they do not resemble objects in nature. This concept is not
unique to the 20th century as abstract features can be observed in
the art of many cultures throughout history, particularly within the
decorative arts. Abstract painting and sculpture, however, emerged
in the 20th century as a new concept that differs from the decorative
arts. An abstract work of art is created when the artist focuses on
the work itself, and it acquires a stand-alone existence. Kandinsky,
who suggested the concept of abstract art in 1910, believed that a
plastic artist could create an abstract expression by arranging the
elements of form in a unique manner just as a composer arranges
the elements of sound to create an abstraction for self-expression.
Genel olarak soyut sanat terimi renk, ton, izgi ve ktle gibi eitli
biim elerinin figratif olmayan znel kullanm araclyla, doada var olan nesnelere benzemeyecek biimde retilen sanat anlamna gelir. Bu kavram aslnda 20. yzyla zg deildir. Her adaki her kltrn sanatnda, rnein ssleme sanatlarnda, soyut
nitelikler bulunabilir. Ancak, 20. yzylda resim ve heykel alannda
yeni bir dnya gr olarak ortaya kan soyut sanat, ssleme sanatlarndan farkldr. Soyut bir sanat yapt, sanatnn yaptn kendisine odaklanmasyla ortaya kar ve yapt kendi bana var olur.
1910 ylnda soyut sanat anlayn ortaya koyan Kandinskye gre,
nasl bir besteci ses elerini kullanarak soyut bir anlatm gelitirip
kendini ifade edebiliyorsa, plastik sanatlarla uraan bir sanat da
biimsel eleri benzersiz biimde dzenleyerek soyut bir anlatma
ulaabilir.
