Our Program

During our Literacy centers (Word

Work/Spelling, Writing Center, and the
Listening Center), I meet with small
groups of students that have similar
decoding and comprehension needs. We
work with books written for their
instructional level. This week we will
also introduce our students to their
independent level ~ These are easy
books that your child can use to practice
their fluency.

Home Reading Books are suppose to be

a little easier than the books we use in
class. Your child should already have the
independent decoding skills to read this
level with ease. The purpose of these
books are to practice reading aloud to
someone. Your child should read with a
good steady pace, like natural speech.
The other book is for you to read aloud
to your child. You are modeling fluency.
This 2nd book also exposes your child to
higher level vocabulary and richer story
content.

Working with Words

This week we will review the short vowel
sounds with the diagraphs sh, th, ch, and
wh. High frequency words for this week are
want, this, saw, now, and do.

Bits and Pieces

September "Fun Packs" will come home
soon. These are not checked by me.
They are for the children to work on if
they finish other assignments before the
rest of the class. At the end of the month
the packet goes home. They do not need
to be returned.
Please return your:
Parent Conference confirmation slip. We

have set an appointment to meet with each

parent during conference week.
All days during Conference week are
minimum days (Oct 17-21st). Students
will be dismissed at 12:00. *They will
not be eating lunch at school and hot
lunch will not be served.

Please take the time to read together

each night. Return the books every
morning so they can be traded for new
books (M-Th).
Thank you for your commitment to
reading with your child regularly.
