Last week felt exciting but long and having the kids come back to school on the day after
Halloween should be criminal!  We had an amazing day sharing our Halloween books with our
buddies and I hope you were able to read your child’s Halloween Book with them. Thank you to
all of the people who were able to help make our Halloween party fun and mellow. We
celebrated Dia de los Muertos by sharing fond memories of those we have lost while eating Pan
De Muerto and hot chocolate. We started using the Second Step social and emotional
curriculum. The first lesson was all about respect. I added a worksheet to the homework so you
can reinforce through conversation or writing what we are learning in class. In science we are
working on an experiment with clay, a rock particle smaller than silt. We are practicing adding
numbers on an open number line. In ACT we introduced our poetry unit with the first focus
element being rhyming words. We read Nursery Rhymes and then created new ones with new
rhyming words. We are starting a new stage in writing in which we will learn how to write
paragraphs. It will be slow and sequential. We will begin discussing the writing process while
learning step by step how to write opinion paragraphs.
I like to put books in front of the class that are connected to what we are learning. We
have books for poetry as well as our fairytales unit. Our class really needs book ends or the
books become a huge mess. If you have any book ends you no longer use, or you can help with
the book ends on the Amazon wish list, this would be great!

If you were able to help our class with items from the Amazon Wish List, thank you! I
don’t always know who sent the items, but our class truly appreciates the support!

Practice at home or in the car!

-Skip count! By 2, 5, 10 (and then off 10 such as 13,23,33,43…)
-Skip count around 100 (79, 89, 99, 109, 119)
-Practice the facts with your child each week. (See above)
-Continue to use the questions presented in Talking to your kids about books (also available on
the class website)
-Check out MadLibs. They are a super fun way to encourage reading and solidify parts of
speech.

Questions to ask your child about what they learned in school:

-What is your favorite page in your Halloween book?
-What are the rock sizes you have learned from largest to smallest? (boulder, cobble, pebble,
gravel, sand, silt, clay)
- On the open number line, why do you start with the larger number?
-When are you the most respectful at school? Is it easier to be respectful in certain places? The
classroom? The playground? Why do you think so?
