Meeting 1: Sources/Scope/Progress

Applications in Research BLDG 3164

Student _Khilan Patel_______

Date sept 21st, 2016

1. Proposed topic (original, updated, or new topic)

Intergrading 3D printers in Canadian Construction
2. Overall Scope

In this research I would like to talk about what is 3D printing and how it will
benefit others. 3D printing is the fastest and cheapest construction that is
evolving right now. 3D printing is manufacturing process that builds layers to
create a three- dimensional solid object from a digital model. They dont
have same design constraints that may hinder the current construction
methods. Many people will benefit from 3D printers because not only
cheaper houses but also they can have the types of design they want for
their houses

4. Progress Report
Almost all the secondary sources are found and now all I have to do is start focusing
on primary report. As soon as I collect my data I will make my report and my
research will be ready.
5. Survey/Interview questions/Experiment methods/materials
description
Are 3D printers practical in construction? Why?
Will you support 3D printers if they do come to Canada?
I will be going around different sites for this interviews. I will start my own job. I
already interviewed my project manager about this. I will ask students in George
brown college that are doing anything related to construction.
1st - Interview with James from RICS. More interviews will be done throughout more
conferences. He said he totally believes that 3D printing will be a thing in 5-10
years. He supports it because it uses a lot of recycled materials. By doing that you
are saving a lot of money in construction material and also supporting the
environment. This also depends on the oil prices and how they stay in 5 years. He
also said it will be challenging to build a high-rise building.
2nd- Interview with a Project manager from UK also a researcher said she I think it
is super cool to have a building that can be done in very little time and doesnt cost
a lot.
Do you know anything about 3D printers in construction industry?
C

Yes

No

Would you support 3D printing in Canada?

Yes

No

Do you think it could have a major impact on the construction industry in Canada?
