fahsai : Speech
The lack of human dignity is the direct result of the policy of the white supremacy.

White
supermacy implies black inferiority. Legislation designed to preserve white supremacy
entrenches this notion. I have dedicated my life to this struggle of the African people. During
my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought
against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the
ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with
equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is

an ideal for which I am prepared to die.

chichi : Events happening at that time

http://www.biography.com/people/nelson-mandela-9397017#mandelas-imprisonment
At that time, Nelson involved in the ANC in 1942; he was part of the Defiance Campaign. His
aim was to strengthen the voice of rural people and workers, believing the government was
ineffective. He established policy such as goals of full citizenship and free and compulsory
education for children. He was arrested in 1956 with other members and ANC was
challenged by black activists saying that ANCs policies were ineffective.
In 1961, Nelson began to think that changing from non-violent tactics to violence was the
way to achieve the goal. Thus, after he had his army, he was sentenced to five years in
prison for striking action. Again in 1963, Nelson was on trial and was sentenced to life
imprisonment.

After 27 years in the prison, he was released and declared that ANC will continue until black
have the right to vote. In 1991, Nelson was elected as ANC president and negotiated with
President F.W. de Klerk to share power; however, many blacks want complete power. In
1994, Nelson was finally elected as first black president at the age of 77.

grace : What risk did Nelson Mandela take in making this speech?
Nelson Mandela risked to get arrested by making the speech that he was fought
against black domination, and ask for democratic and equality in African. Hes already
undergone 27 years being locked in prison, by publicly (in court) making the firm statement
of bringing equality to black people, his fate of whether he was to be put under another form
of restriction again was unknown. In 1994 to 1999 he was the President of South Africa,
which the elected in a democratic election happened for the first time, and he is also chief
executive.

grace : Why do you think he still made it?

He is a speaker for African, which fought and asked for the right things in the society;
such as equality, democratic, and free society. The unjust treatment white people gives to
black people has been going on for a long time without anyone attempting to put a stop to it.

fahsai : What evidence does he present non-violence strategy?

In his speech, he stated that hes been there from the time of both black and white
domination. Hes been there when freedom of the white population took over and oppressed
black people and took away their rights. Although he stood up for the black citizens. Apart
from protesting, Mandela has always been quite a peaceful man, taking the non-violent path
as his goal was only to bring equality for black people and demolish racial discrimination.
There was a time when he burned his black citizenship paper to show that he was no longer

willing to be governed under this system of white supremacy. This was the protest that
locked him up in jail for 27 years.

He said that he want the 22quality between black people and white people. Moreover, he
want the peaceful and he want everyone to have happiness.

Fahsai : What sort of society does he want?

Mandela wanted a society that was peaceful-- where equality between black and white
people exists, where black people are free and treated like humans. A society where
everyone was to be treated with equal human rights and without unfair treatment for certain
groups-- I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black
domination-- he doesnt take sides because he didnt want either party to take domination,

peaceful life and be able to share a society.
