ESL B: Digital Portfolio Initial letter

Purpose: To communicate your goals for ESL - B course in a formal letter to


your teacher.
Task: Write a formal letter introducing yourself, describing your experience
with ESL in school, and outlining your goals for ESL- B course.
Process:
1. Examine a sample formal letter for the proper format. A proper format
including addresses must be included.
2. In the first paragraph of your letter, describe yourself in as much detail
as possible. (What is your name? How old are you? Have you always lived
in Canada? What hobbies do you have? What is your favorite subject and
why? Describe your family, etc.)
3. In the second paragraph, describe what you like and/or dislike about
studying English and one or two things that you find very interesting or
you want to learn more about.
4. In the third paragraph, describe your goals with respect to the ESL B
course. Consider the following things for discussion:
a. Attendance
b. Arriving to class on time
c. Completing assignments
d. Preparation for tests/quizzes
e. Listening in class
f. Maintaining an organized notebook
g. Communicating with your teacher
h. Working with other students
i. Final grade range (ex. Between 75 and 80%)
5. Proofread the letter and make the corrections.
6. You must type the good copy of the letter and save it on your computer at
home or e-mail it to you.
7. Later you will be asked to submit it online on my Google web-site.
8. Be creative. This is your first entry for your portfolio.
