A Message from Your President

A few years ago at one of our business meetings, we
decided that we wanted to be known as a DKGTexas
chapter that specializes in helping students in our
area in a variety of way. For the past two years we
provided Jared Boxes for a local childrens hospital.
For many years, we have provided a variety of
donations for a local shelter for women and children,
The Bridge. We have collected Boxtops4Education for local elementary
schools and we have been collecting donations for the use of homeless
students in our area. Additionally, annually, we provide a grant of $500
for a worthy high school graduating senior (female) who is planning to
enter the field of education. And this past year, we were able to obtain
a $1000.00 grant from ASTEF to be used to pay tablet insurance fees
for homeless students.
Because we have been able to do all of
these things, we can be thankful!

Zeta Omega News

At our October meeting, we had a veritable feast provided by our hostesses pictured left: Monique, DiAnn,
Dana, and (not pictured) Lauren. Our program was presented by Amy Bigbee, pictured right. Amy shared
with us her story of having been diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 42 and of having found that she
carried the BRCA 2 mutated gene that predisposes the carriers to a very high risk of breast and/or ovarian
cancer. She shared with us her personal journey and information about breast cancer, mammograms, and
the BRCA genetic mutation. Additionally she explained to us ways to be of help to breast cancer patients and
their families. Members present were very interested in what Amy had to say.

Recipe Roundup - Pumpkin Dump Cake

I had this at a function just the other day and it was delicious.
Ingredients:

1 16 ounce can of pumpkin puree

13 ounces evaporated milk
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
4 eggs
1.5 cups sugar
1 box yellow cake mix
1 cup butter, melted
1 cup chopped pecans
Directions:
Mix pumpkin, evaporated milk, spice, eggs, and sugar. Pour into ungreased 9 x 13 inch pan. Sprinkle with
dry cake mix. Drizzle with the melted butter and top with pecans.
Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes or until firm.
This is great topped with whipped cream.

MINUTES
Regular Meeting of Zeta Omega Chapter
October 17, 2016
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Zeta Omega Chapter was called to order at 4:45 p.m.
with 14 members present at the Carmen Orozco Center by President Dianne Moose. The guest speaker,
Amy Bigbee, a breast cancer survivor, told her story about her experience with breast cancer and stressed
the key to conquering cancer is early detection.
Following the presentation, the business meeting was held. The minutes were accepted as
published. The Treasurers report was accepted for audit as it was published in the newsletter.
DiAnn Fernandez offered her home for the Christmas celebration to be held on Monday, December
12. Members are asked to bring a covered dish and a $10 Christmas-themed gift to exchange.
The Zeta Omega Birthday meeting will be November 14 at 4:30 p.m. at Savannah Caf and Baker
located on Texas Highway 3.
It was decided that the Founders Day dinner will be a joint endeavor with other local chapters as is
tradition. The time and place is pending until the presidents meet and decide on those factors.
The Texas State Organization (TSO) Convention will be at the Houston Hyatt Regency June 22-24,
2017. Zeta Omega will be in charge of the head table line up. Also, Zeta Omega needs volunteers for table
hostesses at the two formal meal functions; a sign-up sheet is provided.

Members discussed the fund raising activity for the Grant-in-Aid scholarship. All members agreed
that it would be a better idea for members to just donate the money that is needed to cover the grant. If each
member donates around $20, the grant would be covered.
The next meeting location will be Monday, November 14 at 4:30 at the Savannah Caf. Members will
be responsible for their own meal expenses; a birthday cake will be provided as dessert.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
