Assignment 4

(Convection Diffusion)
Last date: 23rd October
This assignment is divided into different groups. Every group will choose different combination of
schemes as given below and will work on that. You are asked to do analysis on that particular
scheme. You can present any issues (e.g. stability etc.) related to that scheme extensively. At the
end you have to deliver a small presentation.
Problem 1:
In a steady two-dimensional situation, the variable is governed by
div(u) = div(grad) + a - b
where = 1, = 1, a = 10 and b = 2. The flow field is such that u = 1and v = 4 everywhere. The
values of are given for four boundaries. Adopting a control volume design as discussed in the
class, calculate the distribution inside the domain. You can assume a uniform grid. The
dimension of the geometry is 3 x 3.

Group 1: Use CDS and 1st order UDS

Group 2: Use Hybrid and 1st order UDS
Group 3: Use 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (Quick) order UDS
Group 4: Use Power Law Scheme and 1st order UDS
Group 5: Use Exponential and 1st order UDS
Problem 2:
Consider the transport of a scalar quantity in a known velocity field. The flow filed represents the
flow near a stagnation point. The boundary conditions for are as given in the figure below.
Find out the distribution in the solution domain.
Group 6: Use CDS and 1st order UDS
Group 7: Use Hybrid and 1st order UDS
Group 8: Use 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (Quick) order UDS
Group 9: Use Power Law Scheme and 1st order UDS
Group 10: Use Exponential and 1st order UDS

Problem 3:
Consider the steady conduction-convection problem. Assume a non-uniform grid. Derive
expressions for the coefficeints using the schems given below. If E = 1 and W = 0, calculate P
for Pe = u xe/ = -10, -5, -1, 0, 1, 5, and 10 when xe/xw = 1.2
Group 11: Power law scheme and 1st order UDS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Following things should be kept in mind in the preparation of the report and its presentation
Derivation of the discretization equations
Results with different mesh size
Effect with Peclet number (you can change the velocity)
Discussions about stability issues
You are free to exhibit any interesting phenomenon associated with the problem. You are free
to solve the problem with different parameters (apart from the given ones) if you can show
something interesting.
At the end I would like to see the comparison of the results using all the schemes. So, every group
should communicate with one another for a comparison.
