Privacy and Surveillance in Orwell's 1984

Citizens of Oceania are oppressed by the Party's advanced surveillance technologies that inhibit them
from seeking privacy in society. The overbearing presence of technologies is exemplified as Orwell writes,
"You have to live...in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every
move was scrutinized" (3). The presence of technology exerts an omnipresent control of the citizens of Oceania
which results in the oppression of the nation's citizens. Every citizen's actions, bodies, and thoughts and
manipulated and controlled by the surveillance technologies as citizens must act according to the laws of the
Party. This leads the citizens of Oceania to believe that they are powerless to act against the Party and are
unable to explore opportunities for autonomy outside of the Party's sphere of surveillance. In this way, Orwell
demonstrates that the use of surveillance technologies results in the oppression of citizens who are constantly
subjected to manipulation.
