Bloodborne Pathogens

1.1 Define bloodborne pathogens.


Microorganisms in human blood which can infect and cause disease in humans.
1.2 Define other potentially infectious materials (OPIM)
Anything that comes out of the body - bloody fluid or tissue.
1.3 Identify the cause of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and how it is
transmitted.
Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus (HIV) from shared needles or sexually transmitted.
1.4 Identify the cause of Hepatitis B and how it is transmitted.
Hepatitis B virus transmitted through blood or OPIM of an infected person.
1.5 Identify the cause of Hepatitis C and how it is transmitted.
Hepatitis C virus transmitted through blood or OPIM of and infected person.
2.1 Identify the purpose of the MIOSHA Bloodborne Disease Standard.
To protect employees who may have had an occupational exposure to blood or OPIM
2.2 List where to obtain a copy of the MDOC Bloodborne Pathogens: Exposure Control Plan.

2.4 List actions to take after exposure to blood or OPIM.
Clean exposed area immediately and obtain first aid. Immediately report to supervisory staff.
2.5 Describe the process for requesting HIV/HBV/HCV testing of a prisoner.

2.6 Define Universal Precautions
Treat any blood or OPIM as if it were infectious with bloodborne pathogens.
3.1 Identify the purpose of personal protective equipment and protective clothing.
PPE (gloves, gown, eye shield, mouth/nose mask, booties, etc.) is used to prevent infection.
3.2 List areas where personal protective equipment kits and blood spill kits can be found.
Housing units, schools, food service, prison industries, absconder recovery vehicles.
3.3 Given a specific task, identify the proper personal protective equipment required by the
MDOC Exposure Control Plan, form CHJ-447 Guidelines for Universal/Standard Precautions Custody/Non-Health Care Staff.

3.4 List the appropriate disinfectant or disinfecting combination authorized for use in the
decontamination of a blood or OPIM spill.

3.5 Identify how to properly dispose of contaminated sharps.

3.6 Identity, don and remove personal protective equipment.
