First Aid

1.1 Describe the actions required of MDOC staff during a medical emergency.
Respond immediately (within 4 minutes)
1.2 Identify how emergency medical assistance is summoned and what type of emergency first
aid staff are required to provide.
Control center, keep providing first aid until relieved by EMT
1.3 Describe how to complete a Prisoner Injury Report form (CSJ-156)
Block info, statement of injured person, reporting staff section
1.4 Identify the protective equipment and first aid supplies to be used in medical emergencies in
Department first aid kits.
Adhesive tape, sterile pads, gloves, ABD pad, band-aids, quick-clot, stretch bandage, first aid
info.
2.1 Describe the steps used to control external bleeding.
Assess scene, don gloves, ask if you can help, send for first aid kit and control center or 911,
put dressing on wound, apply direct pressure, wrap dressing to hold in place.
2.2 Describe signs and symptoms of shock and emergency first aid treatment for shock.
Circulatory system fails to deliver adequate blood to parts of body.
Weakness dizziness, cold, faint, nauseous, pale or ashen. Help victim lie on back and cover
victim to help maintain body temperature. Dont move victim if suspected spinal injury.
3.1 Describe the general guidelines for providing emergency medical care or first aid in a
correctional facility.
Initial assessment, secure scene, call control center, perform emergency first aid you are
qualified to perform, monitor for responsiveness and breathing until healthcare arrives on scene.
3.2 Identify and demonstrate proper procedures to administer emergency medical care of first
aid in the following circumstances:
Amputations, puncture wounds, stab wounds, burns, heat emergencies, chemical burns,
anaphylaxis, seizure, diabetes, poisoning, bites, sprains, strains and broken bones, electric
injuries, eye injuries, and cold emergencies.
