Tutorial 1
To be discussed on Thursday 6th October 2016
2. Calculate the ionic strength of a solution containing 0.02 M NaCl and 0.02 M BaCl 2
3. 50 mL 0.1 M NaOH solution is mixed with 50 mL 0.2 M HCl solution. Calculate the
ionic strength of the resulting mixture assuming the volumes are additive
4. For a 0.0010 M MgCl2 solution, calculate the ionic strength, the activity coefficient
for each ion, and the activity of each ion.
5. Calculate the solubility of calcium fluoride in 0.01 M sodium sulfate solution taking
into account the activity coefficients. The solubility product constant for CaF2 is Ksp =
4.0x10-11
6. Calculate the molar solubility of LiF in pure water taking into account the activity
coefficients. The solubility product constant for LiF is Ksp = 1.7x10-3
