To determine the strength of the given sodium hydroxide solution. Provided is M/20 oxalic
acid solution.

Theory:

Chemical Equation:

COOH (aq) + 2NaOH(aq) COONa (aq) + 2H2O (l)

COOH COONa

Procedure:

I. Preparation of M/20 solution of Oxalic acid :

Accurately weight 1.575 g of solid Oxalic acid and transfer it to 250 ml SMF..
i. Make up the solution upto 100 ml in the SMF.

II. Estimation of Molarity & strength of Sodium Hydroxide using standard Oxalic acid
solution:

i. Burette solution : Sodium hydroxide solution (unknown solution)

ii. Pipette solution : Oxalic solution (standard M/20 solution)
iii. Conical Flask solution : 20 ml standard Oxalic acid
iv. Indicator : Phenolphthalein
v. End point : Colourless to pale permanent pink colour.
vi. Room temperature : 250C
vii. Mass (Molar) of NaOH : 40 g/mol
viii. Mass (Molar) of Oxalic acid : 126 g/mol

Result:

i) Strength of Sodium Hydroxide = 4.04 g/l

1
Calculation:
I. Preparation of 0.05M solution of Oxalic acid :

Molar mass of Oxalic acid = 126 g/mol

Amount required for preparing M/20 solution of oxalic acid :

S
Molarity =

Mass of Oxalic acid =

Mass of Oxalic acid = 1.575 g

II. Estimation of Sodium hydroxide solution using standard Oxlic acid solution:
Observation table:
Volume of Burette Reading
Volume of Oxalic Concordant value
S.No Oxalic acid (ml)
acid (ml) (ml)
(ml) Initial Final
1 20 0 19.8 19.8
19.8
2 20 0 19.8 19.8

Volume of Oxalic acid solution, V1 = 20 ml

Molarity of Oxalic acid solution, M1 = M/20 = 0.05M
Volume of Sodium Hydroxide solution, V2 = 19.8 ml
Molarity of Sodium Hydroxide solution, M2 = ? ml
Calculation of molarity of NaOH solution :

2 = 1 moles of Oxalic acid

2(M2V2) = 1 ( M1V1)

=
M2 = 0.1010 M

Strength of NaOH = Molarity x Molar mass

= 0.1010 x 40
= 4.04 g/l
