Below The Hook Lifters, Spreader Bars, and Lift Beams etc.
Visual and WVMPI Inspection and Reporting Requirements for:
Regulations as per: AMSE BTH-1-2011 Design of Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices, ASME B30.20-2010
Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices. CAN/CSA W59 Welded Steel Construction
As the certifying party, Proofloading Inc. requires documentation that the fabrication of the spreader bar
has been completed to the CSA and ASME specifications called out on the drawing. The visual
inspection report verifies weld profile, dimensions and details of construction to the welding code.
(Sample of acceptable inspection reports available).
The Magnetic Particle testing (MPI) reports and validates the welds physical integrity and defects such as:
cracking, under cut and porosity. Any deviations to be repaired before load testing and confirmed by MPI
inspection and documented repaired. (Sample of acceptable inspection reports available)
The proper inspection procedure should be to complete a Visual and MPI inspection by an accredited
inspector before load testing. This would ensure and verify construction to CSA and ASME
specifications has been completed to the engineers drawing and codes. Any deficiencies would be
reported, repaired at that time and verified by the inspector with written reports. If this process is not
completed before load testing, the lifter could fail, be damaged or cause injury to the testing personnel.
An additional MPI inspection is completed post pull test to verify the lifter has not been damaged by the
test load. Documented damage or failure at this point could nullify the tests certification. An engineer
and/or an inspector would verify the level of damage and if repairs are required. Any additional repairs,
testing and costs are the responsibility of the client or fabricator if self built.
To complete the visual inspection, the inspector must have CSA W178.2 Level II qualifications meeting
ASME specifications.
To complete the magnetic particle (MPI) or wet visible testing the inspector must have WVMPI CGSB L2
qualifications.
Proofloading Inc. hopes this helps in clearing up the code requirements usually specified on engineers
drawings for Below The Hook Lifting Devices.
