Lesson Plan: Language Arts & Dangerous Crossing

Lesson Objective
The students will be able to analyze and explain the meaning of various illustrations using the
application Popplet.

Materials
1. Projector
2. Journeys Textbook
3. Computer
4. Ipads & Chargers

Targeted Grade Level
5th

Anticipatory Set
We will review the story Dangerous Crossing.
I will ask students why they think pictures are important in stories.

Instructional Input
1. I will model how to use the application Popplet via projector and mirroring the application
from the IPad.
2. I will show how to insert a picture and a textbook into the graphic organizer on Popplet.
3. Students will work with a partner (who Ive designated) and practice how to take a picture and
write a caption of an object in a classroom.
3a. I will guide students as they work in partners to do this, checking the processes and
results.
Guided Practice
1. Students will work with partner to use app, Popplet, to take pictures of various illustrations
from Dangerous Crossing. They will then write a correlating description of illustration in
textbook on their Popplet.
1a. I will walk around and monitor this process.

Closing Activity:
1. Students will walk around to another partner grouping and share their results to see if they
came up with the same take on the various images.
2. We will then come together as a whole group and process our responses and graphic
organizers to provide consensus on the takeaways on the various images.
