Professional Development Plan for Educators

Daniel Languay identified three competencies to develop: classroom management skills (Competency 4), developing individualized education plans and differentiating instruction (Competency 7), and engaging in reflective practice (Competency 11). To improve classroom management (Competency 4), he will implement new strategies, set clear expectations, maintain expectations, discuss strategies with colleagues, and observe other teachers. To strengthen Competency 7, he will take an active role in developing IEPs and work more closely with student services to implement strategies for students with special needs. COMPETENCY BASED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Name: Daniel Languay

Date: 11/25/2016

Selected professional competency/ies requiring development and brief explanation:

Competency 4: To pilot teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the students concerned and to
the subject content with a view to developing the competencies targeted in the programs of study.
I believe I can improve on my classroom management. I can be a little too lenient with student
behaviors which can lead to greater problems down the road. Improving on how I manage disruptive
behaviors will improve my ability to pilot teaching situations effectively.__________________________
Competency 7: To adapt his or her teaching to the needs and characteristics of students with learning
disabilities, social maladjustments or handicaps.
I need more experience working on the development of IEPs and the implementation of
differentiation techniques in the classroom.
Competency 11: To engage in professional development individually and with others.
While I do engage in professional development through workshops or by discussing teaching
techniques with my peers, I do not take the time to write reflections on specific aspects of my teaching.

Strategies for development of selected competency/ies.

Brief rationale and timeline:

Competency 4: I will try implementing new strategies the next time I am in charge of a classroom. I will
set the tone early so that students are aware of what I expect of them. I will make sure to maintain these
expectations throughout my teaching. I will also discuss with my colleagues what works for them in
terms of classroom management and try to sit in on a few of their classes to see how they handle different
types of student behaviors.
Competency 7: I will take an active role in the development of IEPs for the students that I teach. I will
also try to work more closely with student services and implement the strategies they suggest for students
with learning difficulties or disabilities.
Competency 11: Once a week during my teaching career, I will write a brief reflection on at least one of
the lessons I taught. I will think about what went well, what didnt work and how I would like to improve
that lesson if I were to ever teach it again.
