COMPETENCY BASED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Selected professional competency/ies requiring development and brief explanation:
Competency 4: To pilot teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the students concerned and to
the subject content with a view to developing the competencies targeted in the programs of study.
I believe I can improve on my classroom management. I can be a little too lenient with student
behaviors which can lead to greater problems down the road. Improving on how I manage disruptive
behaviors will improve my ability to pilot teaching situations effectively.__________________________
Competency 7: To adapt his or her teaching to the needs and characteristics of students with learning
disabilities, social maladjustments or handicaps.
I need more experience working on the development of IEPs and the implementation of
differentiation techniques in the classroom.
Competency 11: To engage in professional development individually and with others.
While I do engage in professional development through workshops or by discussing teaching
techniques with my peers, I do not take the time to write reflections on specific aspects of my teaching.
Strategies for development of selected competency/ies.
Brief rationale and timeline:
Competency 4: I will try implementing new strategies the next time I am in charge of a classroom. I will
set the tone early so that students are aware of what I expect of them. I will make sure to maintain these
expectations throughout my teaching. I will also discuss with my colleagues what works for them in
terms of classroom management and try to sit in on a few of their classes to see how they handle different
types of student behaviors.
Competency 7: I will take an active role in the development of IEPs for the students that I teach. I will
also try to work more closely with student services and implement the strategies they suggest for students
with learning difficulties or disabilities.
Competency 11: Once a week during my teaching career, I will write a brief reflection on at least one of
the lessons I taught. I will think about what went well, what didnt work and how I would like to improve
that lesson if I were to ever teach it again.
