Sports Med Lab
TITLE: Preparticipation exam lab
PURPOSE: To demonstrate skills used in a preparticipation exam
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The purpose of a preparticipation exam is to ensure the
health and safety of a physically active individual. This can be accomplished in many different
ways. In this lab we will be focusing on nine different ways to ensure an active individuals health
and safety is up to par. For the height exam we will measure if the individual is growing at a
normal, slow, or fast rate for their age. This will also apply to weight procedure. The pulse
examination will take note of the normality or abnormality in the individuals heart rate. Their
blood pressure will determine weather the individual can play or not play a sport. Their reflex
will focus on if their brain is sending signals at a normal, slow, or fast rate to their body.
Flexibility in the hamstrings and shoulder will provide information on the individuals range of
movement. The pupil response and visual activity both will determine what the eyes see and how
they react to light.
HYPOTHESIS: Students who participate in an athletic activity will have a lower pulse and
blood pressure than those who do not participate in an athletic activity.

ANALYSIS:
1. For each of your group members, was his/her pulse rate within normal range? Give evidence
to support your answer.
Yes most of my group member has normal pulse rate except of Alexandra. Her pulse rate
was 96 bpm and the average I'd between 50 to 90.

2. For each of your group members, was his/her blood pressure within normal range? Give
evidence to support your answer.
Yes all of our groups blood pressure was within normal rage. Only a couple above 120
and above 78.
3. For each of your group members, was his/her reflex reaction within normal range? Give
evidence to support your answer.
Yes all of our group members reflex reactions were within normal range. All of our knees
extended when hit in the directed spot.
4. For each of your group members, was his/her pupillary response within normal range? Give
evidence to support your answer.
3 out of the 4 of us had normal responses to the light. Our pupils constricted but one of
our pupils constricted then pulsated.
5. For each of your group members, was his/her visual acuity within normal range? Give
evidence to support your answer
No, we all had different results. 2 of us had above average vision at 20/15. One of us had
below average vision at 20/70. And one of us had normal vision at 20/20.
6. For each of your group members, was his/her flexibility within normal range? Give evidence
to support your answer
Yes all of our flexibility was within normal range. We all can do the procedure required
without any trouble. Which was to touch your hand behind your back diagonally.

Conclusion:
Yes my hypothesis was supported by doing this lab. 3 out of the 4 of us play sports and our blood
pressure a pulse were lower than the person who isn't playing sports. Some experimental errors
that may have affected my results would have been not doing the examination right. For
example, if I took my partners pulse for 20 second instead of 15 and multiplied it by 4 they
would have a very fast heart rate. Yes I think that the preparticipation exam is necessary because
if a participant wants to play a sport and is new to it the athletic trainer and/or school should
know about any health issues or problems the individual has before entering an activity. If this
exam were not to exist the school or athletic trainer could be held liable for any injury to the
individual during the activity.
