Binge Drinking on college campus
Eventually college students go out to college parties and has a couple drinks here and
there ; however, when things get bad from drinking alcohol, they start to blame their own
college. Students should not blame their own institution just because they get into trouble or have
a drinking problem when their own college institute even state students are not allowed to drink
alcohol excessively on campus .The majority of students are aware what they are doing and they
are responsible for their actions ,and their proper institution states that very clearly. College
institutes have tried to face this issue and about 40 percent of every college students binge drink
based on National Institute Of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Colleges even provide rules that
students should follow and yet they still break them like not letting the college know about a
party that involves alcohol. According to Henry Wechsler of Binge Drinking Must Be Stopped
states :Binge drinking is a reality of college life in America in the 21st century and perhaps
the central focus of fraternity house life (29). Colleges should not be blamed for students
drinking on campus, the student is responsible for their own actions , rules at colleges are clear to
the students, and they have even tried to address binge drinking with the students.
Some people believe since universities provided housing for their students on campus
like dorms they should be responsible for them ; however , some college students break the
college rules just so they have a drink. For instance, students cannot drink alcohol under the age
of 21, at any event that is involving alcohol, the college must be aware about it like a fraternity

party based on CSUN policy 900-06 . So why should colleges be blamed for this kind of action if
the institute was unaware that students broke the rules. In the article, Binge Drinking Must Be
stopped by Henry Wechsler states: A quick ride in a security van on a Thursday, Friday, or
Saturday night could provide all the information needed. A conversation with the chief of
security could easily reveal where the binge drinking takes place and which the student,
fraternities, alcohol outlets are violating college rules or local ordinances (29). By the time the
college staffs finds out that students were drinking , it wouldve be too late because the action
has already been done . In this case , how can a university been to blame for an action if they
werent aware about even though clearly student must let their college know about.
They're re programs out there that can help people stop binge drinking like rehabs, or
other particular kind of program. According to National Institute Of Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism most colleges know that about 40 percent of students are binge drinkers and have
tried to find solutions for this issue. In the article, Giving Means Receiving : The Protective
Effect Of Social Capital On Binge Drinking On College Campus by Elissa Weitzman she states
: public and private agencies are now supporting efforts to reduce it and related harms (1). This
means that there is help on binge drinking , and based on the Weitzmans research, she has a
program to help people with a drinking addiction on school campuses. In this case , colleges
have tried to address the issue of binge drinking on campuses.
Every college now a days has a policy on drinking alcohol on their campus. A policy that
every student must follow according to their respective universities. According to CSUN there is
a policy under the title of Policy No.:900-06 that states : the use of alcohol or other legal
drugs in the manner that undermines a campus climate of civility, collegiality, reasoned debate
and adherence to the policies contain herein is not consistent with the value of California State

University, Northridge and will not be tolerated (900-06 pg 1). Which means that there are
policies that colleges, states that students or anyone is not allowed to drink alcohol on school
campus if it cause a disruption between people. In other words, students who are consuming to a
certain amount of alcohol on campus and cause a problem, then they should be the one in trouble
because there are policies that says students cant drink alcohol to a certain amount and they
broke that policy.

The mass majority of students who are attending college are considered adults. As adults,
they have responsibilities that they need to own up to. For instance, if they are binge drinking on
campus, then they should be responsible for their own actions. The majority of students are
aware that they are not allowed to drink alcohol on campus and yet some still will drink on
campus. According to Jonatan E Mejia student at California State University Of Northridge , a
recent interview states : no, they had warn on us not to do that (interview). Even the students
are aware that colleges have rules for them to follow and prohibit them from drinking
excessively. Overall, if the students know that they arent allowed to drink by they still drink on
campus, they should face the consequences. We all have to face it sometime.

Colleges should not be blame for people who binge drink on their campuses because
there are rules state alcohol is prohibited on campus. Based on Wechsler , about 86 percent of the
college population drink alcohol and some are binge drinkers ,and the majority of college wants
to address this problem. Mass majority of students knows that they can not binge drink on
campus and if they still continue then let them face the consequence like expelled or removed
from campus by the decision they made. Unfortunately, colleges find out about students drinking
alcohol after the action was committed, like after a party got ruined, or students puking from

alcohol poisoning. These institutes provide students the education and housing and even made
rules for the students and yet still break , so thats why colleges should not be responsible for the
students.
