-Its challenging to interpret a religion other than your own

-You dont need to be certified
-Must make register adjustments due to cultural norms/expectations
-Professional standards: your position as a professional and a religious member of an organization may overlap

VRS Interpreting
Advantages:
-Set schedule
-Develop voicing and signing skills
-Self-care opportunities: in-house
counselors & massages
-Break room snacks

Challenges:
-2-D interactions
-Clients use various language levels
-Regional signs
-The unknown: variety of urgent, intimate, etc. calls
-Technology: picture quality; people call from the car or use their phone
which is small/hard to see

Unique aspects:
-Variety of calls & use of regional signs
-No travel required; work in a cubicle
-Breaks at your discretion
-Surrounded by other interpreters/people who know ASL

Post-Secondary/Higher Education Interpreting


Advantages:
Challenges:
-Set schedule for a semester
-If the client drops a class, youre out of luck & must find
-Learn about many different topics

-Form relationship with your client
-Scheduling travel to numerous campus
Unique aspects:
-Set schedule for a semester
-Same client daily
-Variety of topics

Platform Interpreting
Advantages:
Challenges:
-Opportunity for team interpreting
-Cant ask speaker for clarification
-Learn about a variety of topics
-Sometimes, the speaker is positioned behind
-Feeling of accomplishment after interpreting the interpreter
a difficult topic
-Environmental noises in an auditorium
-Meet people knowledgeable about diverse topics
Unique aspects:
-All eyes are on you
-Cant interrupt speaker for clarifications
-Use of PowerPoint presentations or visual aids behind the interpreter
