Planned Lesson Activities

Name and Purpose of Lesson

Plan of Action
Students create goals related to obtaining their career choice and then
create a plan of action to achieve this.
This unit is extremely beneficial for students because it helps them
engage in career investigation as well as creating a career portfolio for
when they will enter the workforce.

Approx. Time and Materials

Anticipatory Set

90 minutes
I will need
PowerPoint on SMART goals
Jigsaw Answer Key
Blank Jigsaw for every student
Jigsaw sheet with only one section filled out for every section
Students will need
Pen/Pencil
Notebook/Paper
Student Warm Ups are posted on the Projector
10 minutes
Answer the following question:
Was there a time that you set a goal for yourself and did or did you not
achieve it? Why do you think you did or did not achieve that goal?

How do you intend to engage your

students in thinking during the
Anticipatory Set?
Why are you using it at this point in
your lesson?

2-3 Students will be cold called to share their answer aloud.

The strategy I intend to use is a daily warm-up/ Question or thought of
the day and Cold Call
I am using this strategy here because it engages students into the
classroom right away and gives them a brief idea of what the lesson will
be covering in class today. Using a cold call technique will hold every
student accountable; as they will all have something for their warm up

in case they are called on to share.

SMART Goals: 15 min.
Methods: Lecture
1. Students will write in their notebooks or on a piece of paper what
is on each of the slides as well as what I am saying during the
PowerPoint
2. SLIDE 1: Your goals need to be specific & significant. They need
to be well defined
3. SLIDE 2: Your goals need to be measurable. State when the goal
will be achieved/how will you know it was achieved
4. SLIDE 3: The goals need to be attainable, achievable and
acceptable. The goals need to be within range for you to
achieve.
5. SLIDE 4: The goals need to be realistic, relevant and reasonable.
They need to be within the availability of resources, knowledge
and time.
6. SLIDE 5: The goals need to be timely & tangible. There should
be enough time to achieve the goal.
7. SLIDE 6: Have students pick out in the example goals what
makes them specific, measurable,
attainable/achievable/acceptable, realistic/relevant/reasonable,
and timely.
Jigsaw: 45 min.
Methods: Cooperative Learning
8. There are five sections to the FCCLA Planning Process, so there
will be 5 master groups for each section. There will be 5 different
FCCLA Planning Processes direction sheets. One direction sheet
with only Identify Concerns one with only Set a goal and so
on.
9. Number off by 5 and students will go to their designated station
and read the directions for their sections and every person will
create a picture that represents the directions they just read.
10.Students will number off within in their master groups by 5 again
and then students will re-group (should have a master of each
section in every group) and teach to the group what they
learned.

11.Students are taking notes in their notebook during this process

on each section in the FCCLA Planning Process.
During work time walk around and be sure that students are
staying on task and probe questions about their section and
their drawings
Students Create Goals & Plan: 20 min.
Methods: Individual Practice
12.Using the notes you have taken in class today you will now
create 2 SMART goals related to obtaining your career. After I
approve these goals, you will complete the FCCLA Planning
Process using one of your SMART goals.
13.Write your SMART goals on a separate sheet of paper and turn it
into me at the end of class. Finishing your Planning Process will
be homework.
During this time walk around and make sure students are
staying on task and facilitate when needed. Approve 2
SMART goals for every student
The strategies I intend to use are lecture, cooperative learning, and
individual practice.
I am using this strategy here because: Teaching about SMART goals will
be effectively completed during a PowerPoint that students will take
notes with along. The jigsaw activity will be cooperative learning as
students are collaborating with each other as well as adding their
unique twist to their understanding of the planning process. Individual
practice is used here so can students can apply what they learned in
class and create their own goals and planning process.
Last 2 minutes
Everyone will share with one person at their table their SMART goal that
they have chosen to create a planning process for.
The strategy I intend to use is Pair/Share
I am using this strategy here because: it holds the students accountable
to have compiled a SMART goal that will be used in their planning
