WELDING PROJECT (20%) Student Instruction Manual for Preparation of Welding Procedure
Specification (WPS) Qualification
1) Search literatures related to preparation of Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) qualification
exercise to include preliminary Welding Procedure Specification (pWPS), Welding Record
Documentation, Visual Inspection Documentation, NDT & DT Documentation, Procedure
Qualification Record (PQR), Welder Qualification Test (WQT) and WPS Documentation.
a. Refer to welding handbooks, welding standards and code of practice such as ASME,
AWS, API, ISO, etc.
2) Understand the processes of preparing WPS qualification tests.
3) Select a typical weld joint that requires WPS, prior to production.
a. Select a joint either from pressure vessel or boiler or bridge or building or piping, etc.
4) Prepare Preliminary Welding Procedure Specification (pWPS) for the selected weld joint.
5) Get approval from Welding Experts for your pWPS proposal.
6) Prepare all relevant forms for Welding Record, Visual Inspection (VI), Non-Destructive (NDT) and
Destructive Test Report (DT), Procedure Qualification Record (PQR), Welder Qualification Test
report (WQT) and Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) document.
7) Prepare welding coupons, welding joint, welding consumable, welding machine and welding
tooling for Welding Procedure Tests.
8) Perform welding according to pWPS.
9) Fill-up Welding Record form and Visual Inspection document.
10) Conduct NDT and DT, fill-up the respective forms.
11) Fill-up PQR, WQT and WPS documents.
12) Endorse PQR, WQT and WPS documents. You may get endorsement from Welding Inspector.
13) Prepare Welding Project Report for submission to include:
a. Introduction
b. Preliminary WPS proposal
c. Justification for the selected specifications in pWPS
d. Attach the respective documents (4) to (12)
e. Discussion and Recommendation
f. Conclusion and References
