Communication Applications
Executive Summary
Communication is a key aspect in modern life. The need for quick, safe and responsive
communication methods have become vital. To aid this, many communication applications,
such as Facebook, Whats App, etc. have been developed and this report focuses on a
survey regarding these applications.
Our survey on communication applications looks to understand which communication
applications people prefer, why they prefer it and how these applications have affected
their social and individual lives.
The survey has been conducted via then use of a detailed questionnaire, with mostly closeended questions. The results of the survey have been given through the use of descriptive
statistics (Frequencies, charts, etc.). Based on the results, some hypotheses have been
developed and tested, using Chi-Square, ANOVA, T-tests, etc.

Conclusion
This report was made with the intention of gathering data with regards to use of
communication applications and their impacts on our lives. It was compounded with the
development of several hypothesis which were tested using tests, such as Chi-Square and
ANOVA.
One of the hypothesis was the number of countries communicated in is dependent on the
age of the individual. This seems natural as, with age, the opportunity to travel and in doing
so forming cross boundary bonds seems inevitable. Therefore, someone who had more time
to travel and make friends will most likely have a friend circle spanning several continents.
On the other hand, on that same logic, one would expect older individuals to spend more
time engaged in communicating with other individuals, as they have had more time to form
those relationships. On top of this, the reasons for using the apps in the first place,
socializing and work, applies even more to this demographic, with special emphasis on
work. Despite this rather obvious connection, the test findings contradict our natural train
of thoughts, and suggest that individuals above the age of 25 spend less than 4 hours using
these apps, while those aged under 25 use them for more than 4 hours.
What we have seen throughout the report is the growing influence communication apps
have on our lives. There is no denying the way these services have changed our behavior,
and this report was an attempt to quantify that data and lend meaning to these newly
formed relationships.
The sample in question is generic, and can be considered an adequate representation of our
population. Albeit a little unbalanced with regards to the distribution of sex, this can be
contributed to either statistical bias arising from convenience based on the ease of survey,
or a reflection of communication app use among the different sexes.
It is unclear if a more even sample (which in itself is biased, as the sample has been
intentionally engineered to contain an equal or near equal fraction of men and women) will
yield results that are different from the ones obtained through this survey. While common
conjecture is that behavioral patterns are independent of sex, without further surveys and
data, drawing a statistically sound conclusion would be unadvisable and impossible.
The age spread can be considered too narrow as social changes have forced many adults to
pick up their phones and learn to navigate the various channels of communication. This
would also open possibilities of exploring other relationships that are age specific, and can
reveal previously unknown connections that define how we view communication
applications as we age in a whole different light.
While it is unclear if a more diverse age group would have led to significantly different
results, it is obvious there is a tangible relationship between age and our communicating
behavior, based on the few questions that did have age as a deciding factor.
