: Implementing Paris Agreement on Combatting Climate Change

Climate change and environmental degradation have had a significant impact on population
movements worldwide, and this is still to increase. Predicted by climate experts the impact
will be great in the year 2050. Finland was one of the first countries to publish a National
Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change. This happened in 2005. The aim was to gain an
overview of the impacts of climate change in Finland and on the global scale, and to assess
the need for adaptation measures.
Considered globally, Finland seems to be fairly safe from the direct impacts of climate
change. This is due to Finland's biogeographical conditions, cool climate and abundant water
resources. On the other hand, close to polar regions, the rise in temperature is more intense
than global average, and the change in natural conditions more dramatic, accordingly. In the
short term, climate change could have positive effects for some sectors of the Finnish
economy. However, that could change and become negative if greenhouse gas emissions
increase at today's pace in future years. The rapid progress of climate change could also make
it difficult to adapt to new conditions and benefit from them.
According to Finland, forest conservation is a key to addressing climate change. In fact, we
are very strict in terms of the felling of trees, all the trees that we export have gone through
the legal process. Because nature, especially forests, has become an integral part of Finland
citizens. There are also the targets to be realized in facing the challenges of climate change by
reducing greenhouse gases up to 20% of the similar effects which occurred in 1990,
improving energy efficiency up to 20%, and increasing the utilization of renewable energy to
achieve 20% of total domestic energy consumption.
In addition we expect all countries to contribute in the handling of climate change, because it
does not cover the possibility that all countries in the world sooner or later will be affected by
climate change. This is a serious issue that can not be underistimated that survival of the earth
remains safe and secure. Therefore we need the help and contribution all of you.
