Climate Change and

Green Energy
Sustainable solutions for a
better tomorrow
PORTUGAL
• Climate change is, without a doubt, a very present problem in our society and
requires concrete responses at a global level and appropriate actions at a local
level.
There are several measures to limit the impact of climate change.
It is urgent to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt the country to
predictable changes, with a view to reducing the negative effects of climate
change on ecosystems and people's quality of life.
• They say that anyone who has visited Portugal was enchanted by
its magnificent and very stable climate, however climate change
could become a serious future problem in my country and the world.
Societies must understand that, if they do nothing, they will leave a
sick world for those to come.

• According to the Portuguese Environment Agency, the countries of

southern Europe, namely Portugal, are the countries in Europe where
climate change will have the greatest impact, worsened by permanent
droughts followed by a lot of rain, causing intense natural disasters.
Even among the most vulnerable southern European countries, “Portugal is
where climate change has the greatest impact, on water, on rising
temperatures”, and it is possible to see what is happening in Europe: “the
fires with more rain concentrated and long periods of drought”, with
results “on economic activities and the ecosystem”.
• There are also several studies that indicate thatPortugal urgently
needs strict climate adaptationmeasures. Portugal is among the
countries in Europemost at risk from climate change, due to
itsgeographical and climatic characteristics.
We find ourselves in an extremely worrying situationdue to the rise
in average sea levels and extreme meteorological phenomena that
intensify otherconsequences, such as the drought that is constantin
Portugal. This type of consequences tends to increase in the future
and therefore mitigation andadaptation strategies to climate
change must betaken into consideration to avoid losses
anddamages for my country.
• Portugal has several strategies and laws to apply to
combat climate change, one of them (the first country in the
world to present it), a Roadmap for CarbonNeutrality in the
year 2050.
In 2023 it decided to double its objectives for 2030, in terms of
solar energy and green hydrogen productioncapacity. And in
July of the same year, the greencountry was elected.
• This plan provides guidance towards climateneutrality.
The previous objective of reaching 80% renewable energy
was brought forward to 2026, which will help the country
reach net zero emissionsa few years earlier than planned, in
2045.
Portugal has been making a huge investment effortin energy
production from renewable sources, havingreached almost
70% in the first nine months of 2023, between hydro, wind and
solar.
•. The success and increased productivity ofRenewable Energy
could bring economic andfinancial benefits to companies and
families, due to the expected reduction in the cost of energy.
Portugal is among the world leaders in the use ofgreen energy,
ranking 5th among countries that use renewable energy in
electricity production. Therefore, we can say that Portugal has
taken great strideswhen it comes to protecting and preserving
theenvironment with various measures, plans and lawsto make
this country a country with air that everyonewants to breathe.
