INTRODUÇÃO:

good morning class, hope all is well with you!

Today my colleague Camila and I brought to you a climate problem that affects most
of the world.
We are going to talk a little bit about how it affects outside portugal but the
focus of this presentation will be how it affects portugal.
So the problem we are going to talk about is the pollution that fossil fuels cause
to the environment.

fossil fuels are non-renewable energies, let' see:

The difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources is that renewable
sources use resources that are not
exhausted or regenerated in nature and non-renewable energy sources, on the other
hand, use resources that are exhausted in nature and can therefore create various
problems
for the environment.
non-renewable energies destroy the ecosystem, cause global warming, acid rain, the
greenhouse effect...
which cause climate change and problems in adverse effects on human health.

fossil fuels are natural gas, coal and oil. The combustion of these fuels releases
heat that can be converted into energy. In the process,
the carbon in the fuel reacts with oxygen, producing CO2 which is released into the
atmosphere. Air pollutants (sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulates)
are also released, which have an impact on air quality.

the solution to this environmental problem is the substitution of fossil fuels by

renewable energy such as:
.the sun (solar energy)
.river water (hydroelectric energy)
.wind (wind energy)
.heat from the inside of the earth (geothermal energy)
.organic matter (biomass)
.waves (wave energy)
.tidal energy (tidal power)

and even though we know these will have a higher cost, our biggest cost will be
climate decay

As one of the Member States of the European Union, Portugal has made
strategic investments that aim to contribute to the objectives of the Paris
Agreement,
directly linked to increasing the use of renewable energy sources in the energy
consumption, and to improve the energy efficiency of the country's housing and
services of the country.

In 2016, the European Commission presented the "Clean Energy for All Europeans"
Legislative Package with the aim of promoting the energy transition for 2021-2030
as well as compliance with the Paris Agreement. This package provided for all
Member States to prepare and submit to the European Commission an Integrated
National
Energy and Climate Plan (INECP) for 2030. This Plan aims to establish goals and
objectives in terms of emissions of greenhouse emissions, renewable energy, energy
efficiency and electricity interconnections.

With the objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and taking into account
the targets approved by the European Union,
targets and objectives were established for Portugal for Horizon 2030: a 45% to 55%
reduction in greenhouse gas emissions emissions compared to 2005, 47% of energy
from renewable
sources in gross final final gross consumption, 35% reduction in primary energy
consumed in order to increase energy efficiency and 15% electricity
interconnections.
In the PNEC, other indicators other indicators also appear as objectives, such as
the integration of 20% of renewable energies in renewable energies in transport and
a
reduction in the country's energy dependence to
65% in 2030.

but in reality even with these goals of governments we are in the midst of a
climate crisis, and the best way to understand this is to take as an example our
country,
in which fossils have tripled their profits, that's why prices have increased. We
can neither increase emissions nor continue to defend the use of fossil fuels.
that is why we are seeing more and more movements demonstrating against the climate
crisis like, for example, "Ocupa" (a world youth movement representative in
portugal)

concluding our presentation, at the moment in which we find ourselves within this
climate
crisis, the solution as a society is to seek information on the subject and
sympathise with these causes that fight for our future on earth
