Sequential Excavation Method

Alternative names - New Austrian Tunnelling Method
(NATM) or Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) Method
SEM can support almost any type of ground opening
Economise ground support requirement

Applicable for tunneling in soft ground and rocks

Features of SEM
Ground and excavation and support classification
based on GI
Excavation and Support classes:
o Round length or max. unsupported excavation length
o Support (Shotcrete and reinforcement)
o Subdivision of tunnel cross-section top heading, bench,
invert, side wall drifts)
o Support installation (usually every round)
o Ground improvement measures prior to tunnelling
Instrumentation and monitoring

Concepts of SEM
Ground surrounding the tunnel is used as an integrated part
of tunnel support system
Shotcrete lining is allowed to undergo controlled deflection
to mobilise shear strength of ground and redistribute load
Tight contact between shotcrete lining and ground
Shotcrete lining shares and re-distribute loads into ground by
deflection
Additional supports such as rockbolts or dowels can be used
No requirement for stiff support members to counter ground
deformation. Stiff supports attracts more loads and hence,
increase design costs

Concepts of SEM
Cross-section: shape should activate selfsupporting arch in surrounding ground
o Composed of arch and invert (soft ground
conditions)
o Curvilinear shape minimises loads acting
on tunnel linings
o Flat invert (competent rock); Rounded
invert (weak rock and soft ground)
