This document outlines the homework problems for ME 404/504 - Finite Element Applications in Engineering that is due on Monday, October 20. It includes three problems. The first two problems are required for all students, while the third problem is for graduate students only. Problem 1 involves determining the elastic and plastic strains and stresses in a steel plate under a loading force. Problem 2 involves determining the thickness of the elastic core and residual stresses in a rectangular beam subjected to bending. Problem 3, for graduate students, involves determining the permanent deflection and residual stresses in a steel bar subjected to an increasing and decreasing force.

Homework 4, Due: Monday, Oct. 20
Problems 1 and 2 are for all students. In addition, problem 3 is required only for graduate students. 1. The bar shown is made of steel that is assumed elastic perfectly plastic with Sy = 250 MPa. Use Poissons ratio = 0.3 and the Youngs modulus E = 210 GPa. Determine: a) The elastic and plastic strains and stresses in the plate after loading with force P = 12 KN; b) The stress variation in the near notch region (plotted on a path from the top to the bottom edge of the notch) after the plate is unloaded to zero applied force.
2. A member of uniform rectangular cross section 50 x 120 mm is subjected to a bending moment of
36 KN. Assume that the member is made of an elastoplastic material with a yield strength of Sy = 240 MPA, a modulus of elasticity of E = 200 GPa and Poissons ratio = 0.25. Determine: a) The thickness of the elastic core at the end of loading; b) The residual stress in the beam after unloading to zero applied moment.
For graduate students only.
3. Bar AB has a cross-sectional area of 1200 mm2 (thickness = 10 mm) and is made of a steel that is assumed to be elastoplastic with E = 200 GPa, yield strength Sy = 250 MPa and Poissons ratio = 0.33. Knowing that the force F increases from 0 to 520 kN and then decreases to zero, determine (a) the permanent deflection of point C, (b) the residual stress in the bar.
