Texas News

The only national, nonsectarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to the sound

stewardship and active community use of America's older religious properties

Exciting News!
PSP is thrilled to announce that we will partner
with the Martin County Convent, Inc. in their
efforts to preserve the existing 1884 adobe
Carmelite monastery building in Stanton,
Texas.
Initially, we will conduct a community discovery
study to help local stakeholders define a clearer
vision for the future use of this historic site. We had
an onsite visit last week that was very exciting!

Suzy Yowell, Director of PSPs Texas Office, says,

So many of our country's beautiful historic sacred
places crumble to the ground once they are no
longer occupied by people that care for them. This
project is unique in that it has a local group of
dedicated individuals that have made it their
mission to save this incredible piece of Texas
history! I wholeheartedly believe in their efforts,
and I am looking forward to working with the
community to bring life back to the Carmelite
Monastery.

Too many sacred places lie dormant during the

week, their beautiful buildings underutilized. PSP
encourages space sharing as a way to serve the
common good. You see this in a partnership we
helped facilitate at Edge Park United Methodist,
Fort Worth.
Every Wednesday afternoon, a speech and language
pathologist with Early Childhood Intervention
(ECI) holds a Kindermusik class at Edge Park.
Kindermusik is one of the most widely recognized
music and movement programs for young children.
The children range from 24-36 months old and
participate with their parents to build language and
socialization skills.
ECI, a service of the state of Texas, operates as a
division of Tarrant County Mental Health. It
provides assistance to families with children who
have developmental delays and disabilities.

After learning that ECI was in search of community

classroom space, PSP got involved and helped
facilitate the space sharing partnership.
Edge Park UMC is a graduate of PSP's New
Dollars, New Partners program, says Suzy
Yowell, Director of PSPs Texas Office. They have
always had a heart for community service. I
thought they might have the available space, and I
knew Pastor Bill Boyd and the congregation would
be welcoming and supportive of this incredible
outreach. We just needed to bring the two
together.
We would not have been in this space sharing
agreement without Partners for Sacred Places,
says Rev. Bill Boyd, Pastor of Edge Park. They

helped us see clearly how we can extend our

outreach through the involvement of other nonprofit services using our facility.
Now an especially vulnerable population of
children and their families are getting the early
intervention they need. Not in a cold, institutional
setting, but within the walls of a sacred place that
embraces them with love and grace. Most
importantly, in a space that is no longer lying
dormant.
